I'm particularly interested in seeing "new school" tech on old-school framesets.

I've had an epiphany recently. I have an old GT Team Series frame just waiting to be built. I haven't got the cash flow to hand-select the proper parts or do a true-to-factory rebuild. I've passed up a few new-school bikes at thrift shops and flea markets recently that now I think would have been decent parts donors.

In the old-car hobby, I like to see old cars built with new tech underpinnings and drivetrains. I think I would like to take the same approach at building a bike. I don't really care for new school framesets with their fat tubes and "weird to me" geometries. I do however, really like some of the newer tech components though.

My plan is for old-school seat, post, bars, but new school wheel-set, cranks, and brakes.

If you've got something like that, let's see it, I need some inspiration. If you have a retro build that's not much like that... well... let's see it anyway!!

ah, my friend I have a little job in the works. every single thing new school on a very old frame. i'm sure the brazed brake mounts will get a rise out of someone.

1 1/8 works great on those old 1" BMX headtubes, by the way.

sneak peak hopefully next week, waiting for tuffs and bars from ed

if you do a search or look through some of the threads youll see that there have been alot of guys doing the retro builds. There are some other threads that deal with new school retro esque parts as well. I dont think id even attempt to set up an old frame with new school parts, not because im a purist or anything but the geometry of old frames just doesnt seem to fit a grown adult.

Good luck with the build I love seeing retro builds.

This might be what you are looking for...

Old school-
Looptail Pk Ripper frame w/unstamped Landing Gear
Tioga Comp ST tires
Viscount seat
Tuff-neck chainwheel and spider

New school-
S&M Slam Bars
Odyssey JC pedals
New school Torker cranks
Helix stem and seatpost clamp
Odyssey 1999 caliper brakes
New school Tuff Wheels.

This bike is by far my favorite old/new school build. Rides like a dream and I'm 5'11.

Have fun building that bike!

on the subject of size, it was well covered in an older mongoose thread that with the right parts those old frames fit adults just fine. just takes some creativity in the setup.

Rock on Capt!

I like... and I really like the pics. That yellow GT is sweet. But more particularly what I'm interested in seeing is more or less actual old school frame/fork sets built up with more modern tech parts.

Anyone? I know there has to be a few? I read over one of the earlier picture threads and did spot 1 or 2...

Damn Stidds... can't keep my eye off that GT.. .Nice!
