the rest of the shipment of 2007 limited quads somehow got "lost", leaving only 50 in existance. maybe they would be almost as sought after as the originals.

uh yah.
But i noticed Matt Black's quad sn's are in the 300 range. Did they already create a new batch beyond 250?

Hey! You're right BCB...what's up with the #300+ serial numbers? I thought it was a limited run of 250?

This has nothing to do with the above but it happened yesterday. That BB must be rather low. I wasn't guarding my inside pedal yesterday and put a big ol grind on the minty red Shimano DXs. I wasn't even turning fast, just a left turn out on the street. Ugggh, haven't done that in years so it must be the frame geometry. be careful if you go with NOS pedals.
couldn't resist Tom.......ha ha.
but maybe a typo from Matt Black ???

I'll have to measure mine when I get home. It doesn't feel low when I ride though.

I thought there are 500 total. 250 in North America and 250 everywhere else.

I sure hope I get mine. I missed out and waited for the Kappa STR-2...now this. It's the curse of the Quad for me.

Hey I'm sure Todd will clear it up.
I was told only 20 came to Australia.
No typo- QUAD07-305 is on the rear dropout and the other is in the box still. Serial number is on the box but not the frame number.

Can you add anything Todd? Regarding the greater-than-300 serial numbers?
Todd Lyons

250 to the USA
Thirty-ish to Australia
Thirty-ish to the UK
Ten-ish to France.
Total is a bit over 300. Does than answer some Q's?

So if numbers beyond the "first 50" are popping in in other countries, does that mean that the remaining 200 U.S. frames are done as well? and in route?
Todd - after you answer Keep_It_Warms question, can you comment on the seat stays not being welded near the top of the seat tube (like the original was).
would like to know if it was a design error, overlooked, or was the frame run thru finite element software that showed stress would not affect the seat tuibe if it was (or was not) welded in this area. thanks.

Yes, they are on the water.

Can someone show us a close up shot of what Joe is asking regarding the seat stays not being welded near the top of the seat tube? Thanks.

bmx, checkout the original thread. it gives you an idea of the spacing. the winter pic 2 from above that pic also shows the space.
fl bmx would be the guy to ask since he has a retro and original. would be cool to see a pic of both side by side.

does the original one have the brace on the down tubes...
Keep_It_Warm
Mar 8 2007, 02:18 PM
some did, some didn't depending on year I believe. I think earlier ones DID have the brace. Then it was removed at some point. Please correct if I am wrong.

your correct...

Our main engineer did not think that the seat stays needed to be welded to the seat tube.
And from the feedback so far, nobody is complaing about any flex in this area. Am I correct? Let me knows. Thanks.

Todd I like the *look* better, but was just surprised by the decision, I own a 1999 and 2004 Quadangle, and one of the Supercross 24" Quads, and owned an original looptail as a kid... I was just used to that area always being welded.
I've got to ask...
If the main engineer doesn't think it needed to be welded on the retro frames, are the new 2007 Aluminum frames welded in the same area? Is it the difference in material?
Myself I'm a big guy. I'm not so much worried about flex in that area, as much as I worry I might crack the frame at the top tube/seat tube juncture.
In the end I suppose it doesn't matter a lot, if I ever get back into racing again, I'll most likely race the newest SE frames. I want the retro frames more to have riders that remind me of yesterday, and how much fun I had as a kid riding them.

If there is flex in that area from not being welded I'm not noticing it. The seat stays run close enough to the seat tube that if there was any substantial flex I think you would probably be able to see some paint rub in there; and I haven't noticed any. I'm still at work right now, but I'll try and post some pics this weekend of my original and 2007 Loop side by side. Todd, do you know what the wall thickness of the tubing that was used is? I think a thicker tubing might contribute to a fairly stiff feeling cro-mo frame.

Here's my assessment.
I've been doing quite a lot of street riding. Angled bunnyhops, jumping snow drifts, wheelies. all the standard stuff you'd do on a cruise across town.
The frame is really stable. I can't make the chain creak or anything that would indicate extreme structural flexing.
BUT you can sit on the bike and observe flex if you push down on a pedal. I'm gonna call that natural design flex.
To make it less personal to SE, here is a similar situation. I have a set of Garden Grove Star Bars on the GHP cruiser. They've never bent, twisted or failed but you can cause the bars to flex ALOT just by firmly twisting the grips.

Here are a couple of pictures of the Original Quad vs. the Retro Quad. I thought that the gap was a little closer on the Retro Bike, but I was wrong.

Here are the two complete bikes side by side.
