That's the article.
What I want to see from that article though is the little column BMXA always did that had the Haro rendition of the bike with the breakdown component by component, weights, colors, sizes, options, dealer info, etc.
Just curious as to what the stock OG Quad was packin'...do you know what i'm talking about?

I'm putting together a 1980 Looptail Quad, and it is pretty cool to see just how close in design the Retro Loop is to the original! Todd, if you are following this post, did you have and original Quad to go by when you were designing the Retro? A couple of people at the High Springs race thought that I was riding an original Quad. I should have the 80's Quad done by the weekend, and will post some pictures then.

Greg,
Billy Feamster (from F&S & Peregrine fame in the early 90's) leant me his 1979 Quadangle and 1981 PK Ripper to take over to Asia with me last year. He was completely cool with letting me have his frames for nearly 9 months. But when he gets them back, they will each have a fresh new paint job. And soon enough, official retro SE frame decals....

Todd,
That's awesome! Stuff like the radius of the loop, and the dropouts are just like the original. I really hope that sales of this frame do well for SE in hopes that the guys in charge will be interested in more Retro projects. Definitely looking forward to the release of the official Retro SE decals too.

Hope it's okay to ask this (possibly dumb) question, but I need some help here...I've got a set of old 1" threaded Bottemas I want to bolt on to the new retro Quad frame, but I want to run either a Tangent Xloc or a Ciari Pro XXL new-tech stem on it.
Can anybody tell how to do that? Do I use some sort of shim or stem adapter thingy, and if so, can anyone point me in that direction as to how to figure that one out?
thanks guys
Tummler415
Feb 21 2007, 11:02 PM
After talking to Deans35th about this, I guess the best way to word this question is how can I convert from 1" on the fork to 1 1/8" on the frame.
Sure hope I can pull this off...
sprinter
Feb 21 2007, 11:16 PM
Tummler that's exactly what BridgeCityBikes did with his build, except he used SE Standing Gear forks, which were only made in 1" threaded. The forks were no problem, he used a shim inside the head tube I believe.
As for the stem...
I've seen an adapter advertised from some mountain bike stores, they go inside the fork, and tighten with a wedge bolt like an old school stem. But they only have a 1 1/8" head on the top sticking out of the forks, not a real stem. It then allows you to use any 1 1/8" threadless stem on the adapter.
Shims from Dan's Comp for $14.99
http://www.danscomp.com/309031.php?cat=PARTSThreadless stem adapter from Performance Bicycle for $19.99

this is what you need for the headset:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Wheels-Mfg-Headtube-Re...1QQcmdZViewItemor for threadless forks many manufacturers make headsets that will work.with chris king you may be able to rig something up with a threded fork

The conversion issue got quite complicated so I posted a subject in the restore section.
Conversion Info If you could reply over there, it'll help keep that subject confined to one place.
Here is the pitfall....all of those cheap conversions you see on the Internet are 1" STANDARD conversions, not 1" BMX. I'm too cheap to pay 120 for a headset, though.

Hello? Bueller?
Are the other 200 quads coming in sometime this year, or are they languishing in a warehouse in SoCal? I've got the last of my parts coming in via UPS tomorrow...
Oh, and Tummler: forget shims and conversions, man. Threaded forks are bunk. Threaded headsets come loose constantly...don't you remember tearing your hands up as a kid twisting them tight while riding all day?
Go threadless and forget it, that's my advice. Aside from the fact that a quill stem is going to weigh that much more.
Tummler415
Feb 26 2007, 11:22 AM
I'm going with the Bottemas.
I can't see running anything else on it.
I'm not worried about the weight, and if I need to keep it tight, I'll run a headset lock & keep it "old school"...
I "know some (good) people" who may have something up their "sleeve" to help me with the conversion problem...we'll see what happens.

So, at least the first 50 have shipped, with the rest coming soon, but only 4 completes have been posted?
That means:
a) A good majority aren't building theirs.
B) People are still gathering parts.
or...
c) Quite a few owners aren't members of this site!
If the answer is C, it kinda shoots down the theory that vintagebmx members are the ones fueling the retro market and are it's primary buyers.
So, speak up, who has a frame but hasn't built it up yet? Or better yet, let's start a registry thread.
Hey, Capt! That's a good idea! I think I'll do that.

Was I the only guy who knew how to properly tighten a friggin headset as a kid? I don't think my headset came loose more than once or twice in over 4 YEARS of racing and riding BMX daily...
Seriously how difficult is it? Large crescent wrench on lock nut, channel locks on adjusting cone, lock them together, and done. If you had problems beyond that, Loc-Tite it. I never had to do that personally...
Yes I DO like the threadless design better, nothing whatsoever to do with the headset coming loose however. I like the stem clamping onto the fork design a LOT better than the little wedge thingy inside the steerer tube holding the old stems in.
I knew people that couldn't keep their bottom bracket or hubs tight to save their lives as well. It was sad.
As for my Quad... I have #40 if there is a registry starting... I don't even have a pair of forks for it yet, no parts whatsoever. It will be built eventually. My priorities right now are getting the new Haro twin top tube retro frame, and a P.K. Ripper when they come out.
I don't have money coming out my ears to build my bikes, so I pick things up when and where I can find them, and when I can afford them. I could just completely gut my Torker (daily rider), and slap all the parts on the Quad, but that's not what it deserves.

That's funny...I thought the reflector mounts on new school tuffs were just little holes drilled in one of the "corners." That was the deal with all those blue tuffs that were put in the wrong mold not too long ago. What's with the hideous reflector tabs?
I also thought that if the wheels weren't on a complete, they could be sold w/out mounts. I mean, you buy, say, an Odyssey pre-built wheel, and it's not coming with a reflector. What gives, Ed?

I'll tell you what you DON'T need to work on: having a bad-*** uni. Definitely the only dude at the track w/BW leathers and a Moto III, that's for sure.

Thanks for the good comments! The pic on the SE site was a cool suprise. That uniform has been a couple of years in the works, but I think it came out excellent. Gooser, that is actually a Bell BMX III; it was a little lighter/smaller, and only had three vents compared to the 4 on the Moto III. I'm working on tricking out a Premier Super BMX helmet right now, although it is too small for me, and I won't be able to race with it. This was at a State Qualifier Race in High Springs, FL. We had Semi's on Saturday, and still had enough for two gates on Sunday. 8 man Main on both days. We had another Qualifier in Orlando in January, and had enough for 8 man Mains on both days. There are currently 22 guys competing in the Florida State Series in 35+ over Nov.! My local racing kind of still blows. It is usually me racing 14 and 15 year olds.

Great video! Man, how many rollers are in that 3rd straight? That's what ends up killin' me. I have a hard time keeping my concentration through the 5 we have at our local track, and by the time I get to them, my legs are rubber. I can't imagine a whole straight of them.
You let a guy with tuffs beat you? Who puts those on a race bike anyway?
