Its cool to see pictures of these frames and already one mocked up. Looks good guys cant wait to post my pictures. Hope TL is pulling strings and getting dave his frames

If I may ask, how many frames did retrodave order? We all knew, because TL posted it on here, that the first 50 were scheduled to arrive this week, with the remaining to arrrive about a month later. Did everyone think retrodave was gonna get ALL of that first 50? Half? Quarter?
I think it's only fair that if the allotment is 5 per shop (my SE dealer only ordered 3), that those shops that ordered early get first shot at their 5. My SE dealer ordered them as soon as I found out about them, and I tend to stay on top of things when it comes to SE. Did retrodave not get any yet or just his first 5?
What strings does retrodave need to pull? If you ask me, if the allotment is 5, and he is getting more than that, strings have already been pulled.
My SE dealer still has one, you can PM me and I'll give you his info if any of you are impatient. But, remember, first come first served. I believe he has #20 if anyone cares.
I guess all threads regarding a retro reissue need some sort of drama. As soon as I hear people say "I paid so and so and didn't get my frame" I'll chalk it up to kids just complaing that they weren't first on the block to get the new toy. I understand people's frustration, but that's what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket.

to tell you the truth capt i dont know the exact # of frames ordered by dave but i do know from reading this whole thread and posting here also that dave and TL where a bit closer in comunication than the local bike shop as i think dave even released the drawings for TL. I guess i Should just keep my mouth shut as usual dont want this turning into a FMF flyer post or a STR post. As for Paying Yeah I did pay for my frame from retro Dave I paid as soon as they where released No sooner Because of previous threads read. As for time frame doesnt matter to me when i get the frame Cant ride it in -4 degree weather LOL.

Hey Capt.
Glad to hear you picked yours up.
John didn't sound like you were..

Yeah, I wasn't sure either, but after seeing it, I couldn't go home without it. It was either paying off a debt owed, or picking up the frame, so...
Besides, John gave me a deal I couldn't refuse.
Where from WI are you from, and how do you know John? You aren't the guy from H-D are ya?

Got #19 on Friday. I kind of wish I didn't buy the fork but oh well. Very happy with the quality of the frame. I think my Redline retro is lighter than this thing. I'm still going to try to race it though.

I can tell you S/E is giving no special treatment on these frames. We are one of S/E`s largest dealers and we did not get any of the first 50 even though I tried! They are sending them out to dealers who ordered first which is only fair. I will throw in a few extra S/E schwag items when I get the frames out to those who ordered from me. Randy

PS-Summary from Todd Lyon emails:
The frames are made in a plant that only makes frames.
The forks are made in a completely different facility, hence the difference in quality.
He will contact the engineers for that facility regarding QC.
I tried to sway him to have Standard's Illinois facility produce the Landing Gear....he liked the suggestion but doubted the reality. he he he
SE makes very little profit from individual frame sets, I think we should feel very lucky they let this retro vintage project fly.
And he wants pics of those new Quad projects, send em on over to him! tlyons@sebikes.com
Cheers!

So Todd, now that the logistics are out of the way, could you provide a bit of technical background about how the engineers figured out how to re-engineer this frame?
Were there any concerns about design, strength, structural integrity?
Did they have to come up with any innovative design techniques to get this thing produced?
On the old frames people would report the BB would flex under pressure. I notice the new one has some flex too, but it seems logical since that would keep something else from stress cracking.
Just curious about some "frame design" history on this particular project. (Oh to be a mechanical technophile)

Had mine in the LBS over the weekend, some ramp riders came in. Their first reaction was that it was some type of new flatland bike, then they were very curious about it. A little BMX history lesson ensued.....and I learned they are too cool for brakes on their own bikes. Oh, these kids nowadays!

I'm also with the Owl on the number thing. Number, schmumber. It'd be cool to get an early one, but who cares? I'm going to race this bike, not sit at home polishing the freakin' serial number.
I just want mine to come in...trying to get the final bits sorted out so I can set it up. I'm going to put a less expensive wheelset on it than I originally planned, then save up for a $550 set w/ Ti spokes, Profile cassettes, and Bombshell rims. I'll probably get those goin' this summer.
I'd just like to have it for the opening day at my local track next month--plus the Reedley national.

I got my frame yesterday, number 40... Not that the number really means anything to me, I'll never sell or trade this one.
I have yet to build it, but after talking to BridgeCityBikes on the phone last night, and recalling what I remember my old looptail feeling like racing it... I hope I am wrong but...
I think some of you planning on racing this bike, are going to be sorely disappointed. The original looptail had a tremendous amount of flex at the bottom bracket. To the point that when you did a two pedal start on the gate, and looked at the bottom bracket, you could quite visibly see it flexing side to side, every time you put a little torque on the pedals.
I've read people say they couldn't race Tuff Wheels, too much flex. LOL Well if you notice the BITD pic of me that BridgeCityBikes posted, you will notice not only did I have a looptail Quadangle, but had Tuff Wheels too!!! The frame flexed way more than the wheels ever did.
I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade, and I'm not saying this new frame will be the same. But it is however based on the same design, with similar diameter tubing, and it's longer, which possibly could translate to more flex.
BridgeCityBikes mentioned on the phone that he noticed some flex at the bottom bracket on the new frame, I told him I was not surprised. As much as I truly love SE Racing and the Quadangle design in particular, the bottom bracket flex is what made me stop racing my original looptail Quad.
If the new frame flexes anything like the original, with all the racers being used to the ultra stiff aluminum frames, I think some people are gonna freak when they ride the new Quad.
Now having said all that, I can't wait to get mine built to ride it!!! Race it? Not likely. I'll probably race a newer P.K. or Quad. Who knows I may race it once or twice for old time sake, but with today's tracks, there is a reason frame designs have evolved.
Just my 2 cents - Tim
P.S. to Todd Lyons - you should of seen me opening my frame, I must of looked like a little kid on Christmas morning! As BridgeCityBikes told me in an e-mail, re-united with my first true love, on Valentine's Day no less! LOL - THANKS for making this project a reality!!!

I'm with ya Sprinter. I finished mine last night and rode it this morning. Just riding around I noticed lots of flex. I have 48s on it so it's not the wheels. While riding up a mild incline, as the pedal approached 6 o' clock, the frame would flex. I expected to so no big deal. I feel the same as you do about racing it. Definitely not going to be my primary race bike but hugely cool none the less. Also, I noticed a slightly lazy (kicked out) headtube angle. I don't know what it's supposed to be but it lazier than all of my bikes. Still looks bad as H E double hockey sticks!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but am I right that the seatstays aren't welded to the seat tube as they pass by it???? That would make it even more flexy... Should've welded it there.

Yeah I kinda freaked when I saw that. Of course it's been over 25 years since I had my old looptail, but I am fairly certain it was welded in that area. I mentioned that to BCB in our phone conversation. He thought maybe it was NOT welded there to allow the flex so there would not be anything cracking in that area. Definitely a surprise to me.
