My buddy just gave me a cool Phat chopper frame w/1" threadless forks. Thing is, I want to run a 1 1/8" threadless stem on it. Are shims for this commonly available?

Thanks,

biketoolsetc.com under parts/shims/spacers. Oregon outfit, 541/482-0222, has Wheels Mfg in two lengths, and Kalloy(flanged) Both noted "not for hardcore use".

You can make your own shim very easily. All you need to do is find an old set of 1-1/8" threadless forks, Cut a setcion of the steerer tube off then cut it down one side. I've done it before and it definately works.

Why not use a 1" threadless stem?
I'm guessing you already have a cool stem you want to use..
No sense ruining an old set of forks to make a spacer, unless they'r tweaked. I've done things like that then was sorry later.
I'm guessing some hardware store tubing.
Copper is nice and soft and conforms easy to tight curves. It also cuts easy.
I've done the same thing in reverse, used a 1" quill stem in 1-1/8" forks. I got about a 6" length of copper tube (I think it was just a precut joiner tube) and hacked off the same lenght as the quill on the stem. The ID was oversized for my need, so I cut out a section lengthwise about 1/2" wide, squeezed it shut a bit and tapped it inside the steertube, stuck in the stem, Voila almost perfect fit.
Did the same thing for a Bar spacer, I had a *****en double clamp stem, but for large OD bars, but I was using BMX bars. Worked like a charm, though on this one you could see the spacer but the copper color kinda blended in with the Red/Black them I was using.
Best thing is the price was under a couple bucks and I had pieces left over for the next mod.
Try some off the shelf tubing Gooser, should work just fine as long as the tubing wall's not thicker than 1/8". I know any spacers you find are probably gonna be at least 10 bucks plus the ship.
Put up some cool pics when your done.
