I have a set and the outside collars are scuffed up because they are just round and have no place to put a wrench on. So after years of having to use pliers to remove them I am wondering if any collars are available that fit that have a flat spot to put a wrench too. I would like to put in new cartridge bearings, so I will have to take off the collars again. Or maybe some that lock on with an allen wrench, like present day hubs.

The collars shown won't work with BMX hubs without a raised inner lip. Actual BMX collars have a raised inner lip to allow the lip to ride against the inner bearing race while preventing the outer lip from riding on the outer bearing race and rubber seal.

Find a good machine shop and have the collars duplicated. Part of the beauty of those hubs is the smooth axle hardware. FWIW there is something special about the threads on those collars. I think they are under sized to make them stay tight on the axle without a locking mechanism.

It is? I didn't think I've post 3 times in as many months. LOL! No worries.

Just to claridy the collars DMG has shown will work if the outer lip is shaved down slightly. Notice the top image shows 2 rings. The outer ring needs to be shaved to prevent touching the seal while the inner ring needs to stay in place to make contact with the inner lip of the bearing.

I like Hutch hubs so I like those locking collars shown. I really like the looks of Son Lite hubs and think they should have the correct hardware. But thats just my opinion. FWIW a good machine shop should be able to mill wrench flats on the existing collars to make them work with a wrench. Ted McCarl can also show you how to remove the vice grip marks and polish them to an amazing luster, just follow his thread in this forum.

Wow , thanks for the info. Do you guys know if any stock hub parts will fit from another brand. I think the axles on the Son lite were a little different, and not the common size or thread pitch, maybe like old Hutch or CW hubs. But not sure if any other hubs used the same axles. Hey JJ can you give some details on what you have in mind as far as restoring? Once I change out the bearings I was going to repolish them, and follow Ted's plans.

Changstar I'll make you a deal. Provide me with photos of your axles and all hardware and if its usable I'll buy you new CRUPI alxe sets and bearing that will work with your hubs in exchange. I have some son lite hubs with incomplete axles so I'd be looking for stuff that will make mine complete.

What ever you do with your hubs DO NOT POLISH THE SON LITE ETCHING OFF THE FLANGES.

I was just gonna say that. / / /

Hey ray, why wouldn't just buy the Crupi axle kit for your hubs? My stock axles are TI so I would want to keep those, plus I would like to keep as original as possible. I am the first and only owner of these hubs. Had them for like 20 years and have rebuilt wheels around them many times. Just time for a good clean up and will be on a daily rider.

jason, i was planning on polishing one or both of my sets of son lites also....spoke to a guy(ted) at a shop called www.laserscribe.com and told him about my polishing plans on some cook bros items i will need re-laser etched also...i was gonna send him a couple of my items to "save" the artwork first, and then polish it all, and then send it back to get the work done...im not doing this 2maro but i will post his finished product(s) soon

Jason, I want the period correct hardware for my hubs. I think those hubs are bad *** and anything other than the exact original condition is cheesy in my opinion. Crupi collars on Son Lite hubs is cheesy, polishing the logo of the flanges is cheesy, and changing the hub body color to something that was never offered is chessy.

I don't think you axle threads are any different from any other axles due to the use of different nuts. I think the difference is tighter threads on the collars so as to not require a locking mechanism.
