what causes a euro bottom bracket to "creek"? I've heard that if you take out the bearing cups and re-grease the threads it will stock the creeking. Anybody know anything about this? Also, do you think if I put plumber's teflon tape on part of the threads if this will help "cushion" the threads and keep them from creeking?

removing, regreasing, properly retightening will usually fix a creak...assuming it's not being caused by a physical problem with some component.

being a professional mechanic for 20-some years, i don't believe in the teflon tape trick. if a cup creaks in the frame it's because it's moving (not tight enough). all the teflon tape does is muffle that sound while still allowing the cup to move (and damage threads in the process).

Ok what type of cranks are you using?? is it a square taper spindle ??? Some times the arms become worn and the creaking comes from that ?? We used to take our arms to a machine shop and he would build them up a little square taper of the arm it would go away for a while then come back in a yr or so....

I'll second the motion on metal movement, even if ever so slight. I also have wrenched for 20+ years and see this on auto's. Just put some cranks together on a street bike I'm doing, little high temp grease on spindle ends and tighten down arms so when I crank down with all 250 lbs. I don't hear that bad creek noise.

I was running some Voxom cranks which are similar to the old 401 Flights single pinch bolt with a Poverty euro bottom bracket.

I just bought some Profile cranks with an FSA euro bottom bracket.

My old cranks creaked, and I want to avoid the creaking with my new cranks and b/b if at all possible.

It might be a "Crazy" idea bit it's true. The noise you hear is from the crank arms... Make sure you put some lube on the threads of the spindle.
