hey --

i'm putting a set of sugino ct chromemoly 3-pc cranks on my 83 haro, and am having a lot of trouble with the chainline not working out right in relation to the freewheel. i'm using one of those old tioga sealed bb's, and on the drive side, there's a bit over .5" clear between the inside of the crank arm & the chainstay and about .688" on the other side. i can live with that, but the chainring's too far outside, and the chain is almost rubbing on the inside of the seat stay on the drive side.

i tried spacing the chainring inward with those little alum spacers they use on road bike cranksets, and it works ok, but looks pretty bad.

it seems like these sugino cranks, being cr-mo, don't stretch & pull onto the bb spindle far enough, as the aluminum arms do.

it seems to me like i need a shorter spindle and a bb that allows for side-to-side adjustment of the spindle. any ideas on any bb's that allow for this?

on my old haro that i'm trying to recreate (same type frame & cranks), i used one of those suntour euro bb adapters & had a loose-ball euro bb. i don't really remember how i worked out the chainline. not sure if it was even an issue back then, or if i just maybe didn't notice the problem.

any idea how the euro bb adapters that are available nowadays (i've seen fmf & db versions) work out? an american bb is already a lot wider than a euro, and the lips on the adapters would make it effectively wider still. seems like it might not work out with a euro bb in the adapter.

dan's has a primo bb available with lateral adjustment on the spindle, but the spindle it comes with is already as long as the one i've got, and i'm pretty sure it needs to be shorter.

i'd appreciate any input anyone might have. i've gotten spoiled by working with floating bb spindles, like on profiles & redlines! the old ones are more of a headache than i remembered.
