hey guys --
i'm gonna try reanodizing a couple brakes at home, and was wondering if any of you know whether the steel & brass quick release part on mx1000's can stay attached when dipping them, or will metals other than the alum be destroyed in the acids used? i doubt it'd be ok, but would hate to have to remove it, since the qr is riveted on.
thanks!

I dont know if its a problem during the stripping process but dissimilar metals will be a problem when Anodizing.

Much easier to grind the rivet head off and punch the pin out. Replace the pin after the anno is done.
Yes you can have anno and steel done. on some parts like stems. But MX1000's almost impossible
cos of the pin.
BUT BUT BUT....most guys wont do it at all
It basically involves a special lacqar (coating) over the steel to protect it from affecting the anno.
I have seen it done in person.

what about anodized paint?

candy paint never looks the same as anodizing, and it's less durable.
the problem with the pin on the mx1000's is that it's not just a simple straight pin -- it's like the rivet equivalent of a shoulder bolt. the shoulder is what allows the quick release mechanism to remain loose & moveable on the rivet. i took one apart once before, years ago, and found that you either have to carefully (like on a lathe) drill out & thread the rivet body to receive a small bolt on the upper side(if you want to reuse the original rivet), or you have to replace the rivet with a cobbled-up bolt, washer & a bushing that's the right thickness & o.d. to fit the slot of the quick release
without binding it up. tough to find the right-sized bushing to do the job.
that's why i was hoping that it could be anodized with the q.r. still in place, but knew it was a long shot.
plus -- it seems like a crime to start grinding away on a set of mx1000's.
thanks for the replies, though!
