Full Version: Sting rear dropout spacers?

I was reviewing some old literature Sprinter has posted on the early Sting.

Sting Ads

Unless I'm delusional, it really looks like there is a nicely machined dropout spacer/washer on the bike.

I personally rode with 3 folks that had original Stings and don't recall this feature.

And I spent as much time as anyone loitering in the Schwinn shop gawking at the Stings on the display floor, I just don't recall this item.

Is this just an artist's rendering, a real item with a Schwinn stock number, or something that is already being reproduced by someone?

If it is a real item, does anyone have the dimension and material specs?

If not, I may fabricate a set out of aluminum just to see what it would look like in real life.
(I'm not a machinist, nor do I have access to a mill. I'd just be free-handing this with a grinder/polisher.)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Not sure what you are looking at there....

click on the blue link above called Sting Ads.
If you look at the display bike in those ads, then look really close at the rear end.
You'll see what looks like a very nicely contoured washer/spacer.

It gives the artistic illusion that the frame tube come down in one nice fluid line rather than being inset for the dropout.

Even if it was something they never actually put in production, it sure is a neat little bit of artistry and deserving of being brought to life on a build.

No such thing.

That is simply how the rear dropouts are on Stings and Sting comps.

Here is what the dropouts look like.

In fact, one of these IS Sprinters old Sting that used to be on his pages, until he sold it to me, and I show chromed it..... He loves it, but misses it...

That is just an illusion you are looking at on his pages....
