hey guys --

do any of you remember this oldschool aluminum headset from the early '80's, on which the upper cup was threaded & the upper cone was pressed into the frame? it came in various colors, and if i remember right, it had a kind of angular look to it (as opposed to being all smooth & rounded). it also, i think, had a single shallow groove around each cup that a sticker went into.

for some reason, i'm thinking it was a tange (or maybe dia-compe??), but when i've looked on ebay in the past, i've never found that particular one.

anyone know what make/model these are?

thanks!
Ted Carl
Nothing unusual about them to us Sting guys, as Stings use road bike ISO sized headsets.

The Comps had a larger version of it too.

EDCO, Swiss made. The smoothest and coolest of them all. Most of my rides have them now. Hard as heck to find.

Tange may have made one too. Some people call them "double crown" headsets, but I think that is a misnomer. Yes they have a crown race on the bottom of both bearings, but a double crown, (I am pretty sure) is more like a motorcycle, with a triple clamp top and bottom.

the particular one you describe sounds like a Tange MX-125.

I had one of the aluminum ones in blue. I saw them in red, gold & silver too. Kind of like the second photo above. The cups were aluminum with steel races set into them. Tioga or Tange, maybe Suntour, can't remember. I think they were intended for road bikes. Jumping made the aluminum stretch & it wouldn't stay adjusted. Looked way cool on a chrome frame.

ah thanks for thhat coasterbrake, i was looking for a pic like that, now somebody wouldn't happen to have one of the top race piece thatgoes into the frame would they? as i just picked up the top threaded pieces with the tange marked on them but missing everything below the to ring of bearings, but even just to use to the top half wouldn't be bad.
also does anyone know anything about a headset made by kuwahara? as i got one at the same time, like were they anygood, roughly what era were they, sorry about the excess questtion, no mean to hijack, just a little before my time really.
p.s the kuwahara headset uses the beartrap style of way of lockinging tight, if thats of any use, and i can throw a couple pics up if need be

mr. coasterbrake wins again! yeah -- the mx125 looks like the one. mine was red, and the stickers got bunged up a bit, so i painted the groove in with blue paint. now i'll have to look for one on evilbay.

thanks a lot!
