Hello guys. I read all of your posts and you've helped me with so many things. I have another question.
I have an old school ELF double cross. I installed a set of 3 piece Redline cranks a year ago. I recently acquired a nice set of Primo 3 piece powerbit cranks. I went to my LBS and got the old bb pulled out and I put in my new BB for the primos. The new spindle is rounded but the ends (where the arms attach) are squared off.
The big problem I have is that my old profile spider (w/chainring attached to it) won't fit over the damn spindle. My old spindle was completely round. Now, this Primo spindle is all round except the ends are square so I don't know whether I should go to a machine shop and try to get the hole on the spider drilled out? I've looked for Primo sprockets hoping that the whole will be big enough for the spindle, but the Primo sprockets are all new style (33T or that small) sprockets.
Do you guys have any suggestions or know of any spiders/sprockets that would work? I have a profile spider w/a 45T GT sprocket right now that completes my old school ELF.
I would really appreciate your input... Thanks in advance.

I think your messing with 2 different generations of gear. Most spiders are made to fit on one piece cranks snug, and you use a ring adapter to fit that spider on a 3 piece spindle which is usually smaller in diameter. In some cases a spider may be made specificially for 3 piece cranks (Profile=smaller diameter). Your new school cranks may only fit the new school sprockets. Personally id of kept the redlines. GL.

The Profile spider you have is meant to fit a 19mm spindle. This is propriatary to Profile and some other 3 piece cranks.I believe a spider or powerdisc made for a one piece crank will fit the Primo cranks-just like the original Power Bites. These are available at most LBSs or E-Pay.The actual measurment of the hole in said spider is 24mm.You can double check by measuring the round part of your spindle. It should also be 24mm.
I don't think any freestyle companies make "big" sprockets anymore.I tried to get a 40tooth sprocket for my cruiser lately and had a hard time finding it.The one I found was a close-out from T-1.
The size of the drivetrains on freestyle bikes these days is miniature.

Thanks. I may try to go my local machine shop and have it ground out a few mm (My old spider/sprocket). I didn't know that I couldn't mix old school/new school parts. My old school build would look really weird with one of those new 38T sprockets...lol. Thanks again.

ok no there not meant to work with a 24 mm hole stop quick, first off theres 4 sizes used commonly.
19mm profile race cranks, oddysey 41 thermal cranks, dk chopsticks, redline flights newschool duel pinch style etc, including a number of cheap sealed 3 pc cranks.
second 20mm most uncommon a few stock cranks, and i think redline over time has used it, not sure when exactly though, also haro and premiun seem to have used it.
third 22mm spindle, this is what "you" have, primo and many generic copies tuffneck, fit, also fsa on certain cranks, eg smck daddy's(I had these until i sold them to a mate) and the old profile ss cranks, I have a feeling that haro and premium, basically one of the same company, i think an attempt at image revival in the freestyle scene. Also these new 2 piece designed cranks fly and ody are bringing out.
finally 23.8mm i believe it is, this is what is used on 1pc cranks and some 3pc , rarely sealed 3pc cranks, but is done so, mainly on the cheap ones which may just use a taper on the spindle, as i found out the hard way once.
normally if the sprocket hole is to big you use a stepdown washer to shim it out. your problem is the sprocket has the 19mm hole drilled specificaly for use with their cranks, i got oe of theese for a mate once, you need to drill t out if you no how to do things like this, it's not that big of a job, with a half decent bench drill, but not for everybody.
what you need is to take it from a 19mm diameter sprocket hole, to a 22mm sprocket hole, for the primo powerbites, my mate was in this situation except reversed as he got a spider for the 22mm spindle cranks. and it needs to be a round hole, not with flats, just letting you know incase of the square end it's given you that impression?
just how you worded a couple things. and you are you using powerbites there not exactly oldschool you realize?
I hope this is of help to you, and please tell me you havn't just got back from getting a 24mm hole drilled,
any way good luck with it.

Thanks. I'm going to use a micrometer to measure it anyway. I have a powerdisc that i want to use with those cranks so I'm going to a machine shop to have it drilled out (probably with a drill press) to 22mm (or whatever the micrometer says). I know what you mean about the square part.. but the part of the spindle where the sprocket would go through is round. Thanks for the reminder though. I have to admit that's what I originally thought. I had a decent pair of torker 3 piece cranks but I love those fat Primo's so I'll improvise so I can get the chainring I want. You guys are the best. Thanks again.

The sprocket finally showed up in the mail. Bullyhotrod...you were right. The hole on the sprocket is actually larger than the spindle. I'm going need to get a washer to shim it out. Will the washer stay in place over time? I'm having trouble fitting one in that will still go over the spindle. The gap is very small but the sprocket is still too loose if I don't use a washer.
