Yes, grease 'em up first. A wood-faced bench vise works the best.

Except .....that often you need to install the crank before you put the second cup in. Especially if you have a power disc, or a sprocket installed on the cranks.
It usually wont make the corner with both the cups in there.
You have your cups in....but are your cranks in yet? lol
...just sayin.....lol
That is why I prefer the dead blow plastic hammer method. I use 2, one of them to back up the other side as I tap them in. Tough to use a vice when the cranks are in there with them....

Always apply a LOT of grease to both the cups and the BB shell... nothing is more aggravating than fighting like hell to get old cups out that are stuck because someone forgot the grease...
I invested in one of those Park bearing cup presses... it has paid for itself many times over by saving much pain and frustration when installing cups... they go in smoothly and perfectly straight every time.

Search to find the related thread in this forum about homemade bearing cup presses. Basically a bolt or piece of threaded rod, some washers, and a couple of nuts and you have a less than $10 press.
Always use grease too...

I've always had both cups in when installing any cranks. Never had a problem.

That applies to sealed bearings for 1 piece cranks.

I always had Sealed PPP bearings in my one piece......
You know, I just realized, that is TOTALLY why I was thinking about that.....
All my stuff has either 3 piece or PPP in it..... I was snickering cuz it happened to me 20 years later when I put my one piecers together!
I guess It doesn't apply to cups does it?
Ooops, my bonehead!....
