You should use tyre levers. For difficult tyres I use 3 levers.....Just be careful not to pinch the tube.

Make sure you throw/rub in some baby powder into the tire/tube when you mount them , they should come off easier.
We also found the wide flat end handles of spoons to be good to use as tyre levers as well , pinched tubes are really annoying & embarrasssing.
Take your time & remember to breath during the process

just wanted to say Thanks guys, the spoon method combined with a little patience worked, I don't know if it's the higher rims or heavier rubber on the tires but I couldn't believe what a pain it was. next time I'm at a shop or ordering something I'll get some tire levers.

were they double wall rims you were dealing with by any chance as that might help explain it as with double wal rims the tire is closer to each side of the base of the rim so you can't pull the tire out from the rim as much as on a single wall like theyuse back in the 80's, I used to always use a 15mm ring spanner for a tire lever when i was younger, honestly the most useful tool ever made i reckon. Also cheaper tires are normaly harder to remove as the seem to make them out of harder compounds, and theres a good chance there cut very poorly  Some better quality tires are still a pain though, ive found the oddysey freq g's to be farely difficult personaly, anyway just my 2 cents.

I'm having a few hassles of my own trying to get a Tioga Comp III offa a 5 spoke THUG mag.
I purposely didn't powder this mag wheel as they usually need all the help they can get to hold a tire on at high pressure.Seems the clever people at SPIN wheels made a _really_ good bead on these particular rims & the tire is an absolute SOB to get off.
Levering steel against some carbon fibre rims is not a good idea to try , so I used a trimmed down plastic punchout for a PC CD/DVD & a flexy divider panel out of a spare parts box & eventually got the tire off.......
The other tip I remember was to rub a bar of wet soap along the inner or outer rim , pending on which way you are trying to move the tire.
Don't use vasoline or grease , they don't just wash off rubber without a trace like soap does
cheers

I always thought the spin had an Alloy rim integrated in to them, interesting.

Tire levers, for sure. Modern wheels are designed to hold higher pressures, if it slips off the bead easily flat, then it's more likely to push out inflated under stress. That's when you get the Ka-Boom!

Park Tool tire levers. They are plastic so they minimize rim damage. They are sold in a set of 3 for approximately $4.
