1st of all you need a photo sizing program. serious.
Secondly, it looks like your building a 1978 model like the John George ad. If your frame is a '79 your looking for a totally different build, see my catalog scans in the museum. A '79 model has annodized 7C's, annodized low flange Shimano hubs with cassette rear, matching red or blue fork, Mongoose suede saddle, MKS BM-1 pedals, Mongoose headset, blue alloy bars and Mongoose shinwall snakebellies.
To properly match a 1978 Team Mongoose like the John George ad and the 1978 catalog you need need MKS BM-1 [again], non logo suede saddle, blue alloy bars, DeCoster fork and believe it or not, the 1978 catalog Team Mongoose has a Motomag decal on the down tube.
Mongoose didn't issue any stamped products [not counting pads] until 1979, then came grips, seats, headsets, bottom brackets, seat clamps and tires.
Team Mongooses came with 39t Shimano rings, both years.
We've talked about the fork already, but that fork looks to be a later model, like 1982/3 when they were putting the red or blue over silver powder coat instead of over nickel, your fork doesn't appear to match your frame shade.
Is the Shimano lever straight or pre-bent? Looks straight, need bent.
What are the date codes on the shimano products, hubs, brakes, cranks? I have the date codes if your as picky as me.
I'll finish with this, I love that bike, as I said I'm building a 1978 just like John's in the ad. I lusted over that ad in 1978/9 like nothing else, I finally got mine in '79 but I always like the 78's better, now I have one. I'm only being picky because I'm nuts about both years, yours, like I said is kind of a cross breed between the 78 and 79.

Whatever that bike needs, it looks bloody nice to me. Of course I understand that you want it year correct. But to me it looks awsome.
And yeah, please resize your pics. Very annoying to look at.

Okay - pictures smaller - Now I am really frustrated. I got all this nformation - gave serial numbers 0 was told it was a '79 but the 79 was like the one in the ad with the guy holding the bike up in the air - Is that a 78 or a 79? That one has no motomag decal? I had a real tough time coming up with the NOS araya rims. Granted I have the correct rims for the 79 and correct hub, the correct seat and the correct grips and black correct pedals. Now what to do? I am sure I will not have any problems getting rid of the ALL NOS wheels (including tires). but how frustrating. I thought 79 was the first year fot the Team????
Please DO NOT take me wrong ; love the feedback. It is why this is a great way to gain knowledge.
Thanks Rob

I have a photo around here of my brother sitting on a brand new Team Mongoose. It was red laquer over chrome plating. I know that, because after about 18 months he pretty much stripped all the red laquer off it, and it was nice and shiney chrome.
I can vouch for the 39T chainring, and the Dura Ace cranks. Also the silver shimano brakes and lever. His bike came stock with red 7c's, and from memory, they were silver low flange shimano hubs, with a cassette rear. (He switched them out for red Z rims with red Shimano hubs) The tires were the Mongoose snakebelly type tires. By what Randy says, it sounds like it must be a 79 Team. The pedals were chrome rat traps (must have been MKS BM1's). I'll dig it out, scan it, and post it hopefully tomorrow

TeamRob here's the magic top-secret serial number decoder info. Please keep this to yourself and do not share it with anyone!
T=Full Chromoly Frame (Team & Supergoose)
C=Chatsworth, CA
F=June (Month of Build)(A=Jan, B=Feb, etc.)
9=1979 (8=1978, 9=1979, 0=1980)
xxxxxx=six digit consecutive unit number
If your bike has an 8 as the last digit of the three digit group it is a `78, a 9 is a `79, 0 is an `80. I'm sure there was some sort of carryover at the end of the year, so a bike stamped as a `78 could in theory be built up with `79 parts and sold as a `79.

Well I guess an "Early" 79 theory is not possible so I am back to the drawing board with building it as a '79. I guess the wheels are going to be for sale soon on Ebay or trade toward the correct NOS Team fork. The fork is for a later model. It sucks since I have a both type of NOS Team forks in Red. Anyone have one that is correct for the 79 Team in Blue? Here is the serial number.

If you have the correct red over nickel plated forks just strip the red off them and have them powdered the correct blue over the nickel. If the frame color is original you can use that as reference for the powdercoater and he can match it to that. I know there is an exact matching blue out there because I have an NOS set of blue forks that I brought to one of my local powdercoaters to try and match up, which I did, but he was way too expensive.

I hate to strip the paint off the NOS red ones. I know someone has to have a set already stripped - I will take them to a powdercoater and hope he / she has a clue how o match without wrecking my original paint. Do they have to be powedercoated? They did not do that originally, will it look the same? I thought the anno was really tough to match!. The most amazing thing is - the can of anno blue by I think Krylon matches almost dead on! The finish would not last though.
Anyone to trade?

I believe some may have been coated over chrome when BMX Products began chroming the others, Supergoose, Moosegoose etc but he was refering to the earlier nickel models. Even later in 82-83 they began red and blue translucent over silver powder coat which is what I believe rob has on his forks.
