I have a 1981 Sting - no post no clamp. Can I use a 1" clamp? I know I ask some gofy questions but I really like things to be correct so others can enjoy them when I am long gone in 40 years..... lol

Thanks all.

No you cannot

Seat post is 26.8 MM. (In todays world). You can still order them from any dealer in 26.8.

It was officially listed as a 1 1/16 inch.

Add 1/16 for the Sting Seat tube, or 1 1/8 clamp, which is (top of my head) 28.4 mm.

Add 1/8 for the SX-2000, and Sting Comp. which has thicker seat tube. Or 1 3/16 clamp. The only clamps made to fit those are the factory steel ones. But you see a lot of 1 1/8 clamps spread to fit them. They are obvious when you see the bent bolt. I prefer to use a Sting clamp, and bore out .0625" out of the clamp on the mill so it fits correctly.

Thanks for the info Ted! I bought a Sting alloy clamp for my mini-sting and it took alot of "spreading" to get it to fit. I took it off and went with the steel clamp. Now I know why, I was starting to think that it wasnt a Sting clamp even though it says Schwinn.

Ted would you be interested in takeing out .0625" from my Sting seat post clamp?

Can you say that on a forum??? lmao

My side business is in season right now and my mill is tied up for a long time with setups. So I have to say no. However...

A one inch sanding drum on a drill will do the trick in a pinch. make it as smooth as possible to help slow corrosion on the exposed aluminum. Not a real huge issue for a collectors item that you tuck into a warm bed every night.

The Mini-stings are really mini SX-2000s. They have the thicker tubing. Which IMO is why they failed to dominate sales. Smaller bike, for smaller kids, heavier duty tubing.....Duh. Too heavy.

Why they did not use the same thinwall tubing that they did on the Stings is beyond me. Must have been cost.
