Full Version: Surface rust on a chrome frame

Just bought a "Dinky Dyno" to build for my son. It's in really good shape but it has a couple areas of surface rust on the chrome frame. This is the first bike I've ever owned with a chrome frame so I've never stripped rust from chrome.
How do I get the rust off without scratching, and dulling the chrome?
Also, anyone know the era of the Dinky Dyno's?
Thanks
Pauly
GEt yourself some Quick-Glo just add water and elbow grease...

It may depend on the quality of chrome you're dealing with whether or not you can do what I did, but I got a Robinson several months ago with quite a bit of surface rust. I used superfine steel wool (double or triple ot) and rubbing compound. My frame looks almost new - and the steel wool didn't scratch at all (and I thought it would). Again though, I can't attest to the quality of chrome on your frame, so if you're gonna try this, I'd recommend trying it out under the bottom bracket or some inconspicuous place.

I have used steel wool and wd-40. Saturated the steel wool and rubbed lightly. It worked very well fo me.

NEVER use steel wool on chrome!Use brass or copper wool as it is softer than chrome but takes off the rust.Steel wool (no matter how fine) causes micro abrasions in chrome and leaves it damaged! It may be hard to see the damage but it is there and if you check out the chrome in strong sunlight it is visible! But before using anything abrasive follow the advice above and try thr Quick-Glo!
