I just got a chrome plated f/f, but the forks have some light scratches in the chrome plating on the inside of the forks (the part facing the rim) Not sure if it was sandpaper, or maybe some type of file?? U can feel the lines, but they aren't all the way through to the metal. I've seen pics of pollished stems, bars, etc. Where someone has worked wonders. So my question is what can I buy to do it myself to buff out the scratches and pollish the chrome, and something that will fit between the fork legs?...Thanks!

The beauty of polishing aluminum is that you can go far enough to have the scratch disappear. Plating however, you are working with a very thin covering (kind of like paint) I took a frame that I had nothing to lose on and rubbed it down with steel wool, and it shined it right up without damaging it. I don't know if that would help you or hurt you.

Wenol metal polish, a rag and alot of elbow grease.

Man, I'd be afraid to try steel wool on it. Gotta think about that one, lol...As for the Wenol, after I use it, will it dull the finish at all? The reason I ask is because I once tried to polish a chrome rim with Mothers', and when I went to shine it up with some chrome polish it actually dulled the finish. Before I even tried the Mothers' I use to use the chrome polish all the time with no problems.

wenol is awesome. If there is any dull area or residue, KEEEEEP rubbing. Like I said, I had nothing to lose on a particular frame. There were tons of surface rust, dull areas, scratches. I thought before I send it to the chromers, I'd experiment a bit. I shot an area with WD-40 then steel wooled it. The rust, dull spots everything disappeared. I ended up keeping it like it is and saving $150. granted it isn't show quality, but that thing was trashed when I started, and now it is presentable and looks good.

guys cmon i will post a pic latter i just gave an old very rusty chrome gt frame to a kid and when he was here he asked me if i would help get the rust off we had nothing to loose ok i went and bought a box of sos pads and in 30 minutes the frame went from rusty and a little pitted to looking very good next i got out a drill and a buffer pad and went over the entire frame with mothers that took another half an hour and for the hard to get spots where the brakes go and the corners we worked it with a dremmel and a small buff pad.Listen this frame was down to the nickle from rust in the corners and it came out looking like whoaaa! Good luck with it its been my expiernce that the scratches dont come out all the way just blend or to the nickel if you dont care go for it you might impress yourself if it means alot to you send it to the chromers

I think you guys putting steel wool on chrome are nuts. Seriously.

What your probably doing is wearing right through the chrome and polishing nickel or raw metal.

Is mothers any good on chrome ? I thought it was strictly Brass finishes and other raw metal.

Sounds like you are going through the chrome and polishing up the tubes.....Like Randy said.

I'm a car detailer and I use 0000 steel wool on some chrome finishes. If you get a very fine wool you will be right.

The fine grade doesn't matter as much as the hardness of the steel wool.It is much harder than chrome and will leave micro abrasions (tiny little scratches) if you must use anything try copper wool (Chore boy) as it is softer than chrome but still removes rust!

Alot of great ideas! Thanks guys! I started to polish them out, but after further review I've decided to say "The Heck With It" I bought a NOS set off ebay! LOL. I guess I'm just getting too damn lazy for "elbow grease"...LOL.

Out on a limb here but, I'm going to guess that bumper chrome is way better than 25 year old bicycle plating, unless it's Schwinn plating.

0000 steel wool is still steel on steel.
