what's the best way to go about this. Do I strip the chrome off or is there a PRIMER that can seal it well?
I KNOW this has been discussed before I just cant find the thread...
in addition... anyone going to be POWDERING WHITE any time soon?
thanks.

What do they do to powdercoat a frame that is half paint half chrome, like old school Haros and Redline freestyle bikes? I have one I need to get refinished totally.

mtbnj, where in NJ are you getting your powder coating done? I have a couple pieces I would like to do too, and some are in white, and going over chrome as well.

MTBNJ...I was the one who started a thread very similar to this a while back. The general concensus from those who responded was "don't do it", but my powder guy (who does top notch work) assured me that it would look perfect. But he did caution me:
"If the chrome has chips, scratches, significant blemishes...then you will see them in the finished powder. If the chrome is perfect...then the powder will be perfect."
I have not done my frame/fork yet....but I still want to.

Those combo frames are chromed first, then painted. But, if you've ever stripped a split finish like that - you may have found the chrome finish on those isn't always complete. Sometimes they're chromed just enough to obtain the effect, so you can't just strip the painted part and have a completely chromed frame. I found this out stripping a pair of road bike (sorry for cursing) forks that were chromed from the dropouts to about half way up...and after stripping the paint I realized that's where the chrome stopped.

Thanks so much for the info. My original plan should still work. Have to get this chrome frame media blasted to smooth it and remove corrosion, then get it buffed & chromed, then powder coated. I'm going to need a second job...

acid dip the piece as long as it's steel. It gives the piece the cleanest palet to either chrome or powdercoat. The end product is badass, plus it cleans pieces you are not touching...i.e...bearing races!!!!!!!!

I have a frame set that I want to get powdered in white eventually also. I wonder if we could get a better deal if we have them done up in one batch.

Tom, I have been talking to my powder coater, who has a very good reputation, about doing candy red on a Pro Racer and he told me the best way to go is to make sure the chrome is perfect and evenly done with no fading. I am going to triple chrome and then powdercoat the frame. The finish is shinier than doing it without chrome underneath. I glad to hear you got your Hutch cruiser!

As long as the chrome is not peeling up or flaking off you'll be fine. Prism powder coat is the official powder coater of VintageBMX.com. I would suggest emailing them and sending your project there.

If you're working with a NOS/great chrome, leave it alone and powder over it. I've stripped a few half chrome/half paint freestyle framesets revealing great chrome.
If they say "we'll have to strip the chrome, etc...." go find someone else. Working with used/old chrome, metal, or finish, just remember these words "junk in, junk out". Prep the canvas before adding new paint.
