Full Version: Powder OVER cracked chrome?

I was given a frameset that has been rechromed. It's absolutely immaculate and beautiful EXCEPT...

Down at the BB shell portion of the frame, the chrome plating has began to crack and lift a bit. None of the chrome has flaked off...yet.

Question: If I powdercoat OVER the frameset, will the process of powdercoating "bond" the lifting chrome back to the steel frame? Or would it look like total crap?

I want to keep the new chrome on if possible and powder over it.

Anyone with experience with a situation like this?

i think the chrome would all be removed before powder.

I would leave that up to your powdercoating guy. His finished product depends on frame prep, so let him do his thing.

I spoke to my powder guy before I received the frameset and saw the crackling chrome.

I asked if he could powder over chrome. He said, "No problem at all...just as long as you realize that if the chrome is perfect, the powder will be perfect. If the chrome has flaws, the powder will NOT hide the flaws."

Did I just answer my own question? Ha ha

I was just curious if the coat of powder would act as a type of sealer for the cracked chrome beneath?
