Full Version: Sandblasting affects chrome finish?

Pete Q
I'm looking for a way to remove the paint and decals from this frame:

I was told today that sand blasting it would affect the chrome finish. Is that true? Would bead blasting have the same effect?

I'm not sure how to go about this. I'm planning on having it powdercoated but no powdercoating places in my area actually do their own paint removal. I was toying with the idea of using aircraft stripper? Is that worth the hassle? Also, you'll notice on this paint scheme, the front portion is a teal color and the rest is a mint-ish color. Can a powdercoater do two colors?

If I can't get it powdercoated the way I want, what other painting procedure should I be looking at?

I realize these are alot of questions! Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks in advance, experts!

You can pick up a couple cans of stripper from your local auto parts store or even walmart. That should work fine and it won't hurt your chrome... just don't get that **** on your skin!
Pete Q
Does anyone know if there is a decent alternative to powdercoating?

E-mail me Pete, I may be able to help you out on this. I normally chemically strip these frames, tape the rear triangle and hand sand the front with a 3M pad before powder coating. I may have the colors you need and a fade would not be a problem.
