I,m just about to do some metal hub tuffs with the same problem,I,ll be leaving them in bleach for a couple of days,so i,ll get back with the results.Prior to this i stripped out the hubs of axles ,etc, etc.degreased, then cleaned with dishwasher,Ive restord loads of tuffs but bleaching is new to me so i,ll see how it goes.

bleaching is VERY good, but you have to remember to leave them for a LONG time, three or four days is about right, then they come out with like a slime on them, scrub this oss with a scotch brite and hot soapy water and there you go.

BLING!!!

tuffs have been in bleach for 4 days ,they are better but still not 100% white. But are 20 year old used tuffs going to be 100%.It is worth doing them in bleach but be prepared to have to polish the hubs back up as they go black with soaking them in that stuff.Good luck with what ever you do with your set.

When I've bleached my tuffs the alloy hubs became also black.
Needed to remove the black with some steelwool and polished them again.
My wheels were only one day (maybe 1,5 days) in the bleach.
The result is better and the color is now all the same on whole the wheelset.
After bleaching I've put them in the dishwasher and after that I sprayed them with WD40 when they were still hot.

Use a product called "Wesleys" something or other. You should be able to find it at an automotive store. Its for bleaching white walls but it is THE BEST for mags.

I was told that the white tuffs were never realy a pure white like paint will be. If anybody has an extra white tuff wheel, take a knife or razor and cut off a little piece. Does it look like a different white inside the cut? Inside where the tube goes is the same color as the outside on mine. This picture has bad lighting. My wheels are lot more white then it looks.

I just tossed a set of white Skyways into the trash heap a couple of weeks back. I was not sure and the fact they turned grey from sitting outside so long made me worry they were history. Now they are I guess.

I found a pair on a bike at the local pawn shop I thought about getting but how would you take blue spray paint off of them???
ORB
paint stripper, I have done it loads, I dont know if you guys get NITRO MORZ over there? but it is the nutz, just be careful, it is savage stuff.

I haven't tried the MAGS, but I learned this from all my junkselling experience...NOVUS PLASTIC POLISH...this stuff kicks ***!!!...it has a little bit of grit and will eliminate haziness ,fading and discororation...it also removes scratches and abrasions...use it like car polish...I sell a lot of plastic 60s furniture, phones ,lamps and stuff...I found about it a couple years ago,the stuff is a miracle cleaner for plastic...its hard to find but plenty of selections on EBAY...you won't beleive it!!! careful of the Bleach ,if too concentrated it can kill the finish and breakdown the plastic...

Hi Guys. It's been a few months since I posted. Thanks for keeping this thread alive.

Our customer service department gets questions like this all the time. You can imagine how hard it is to answer this type of question.

I have always said, I have never done any of this but I know some guys who have. I only make NEW Tuffs. Then I send these novice restorers to you, the real experts.

As much as this subject comes up, I wish Bill or the Admins. would make it sticky so all the answers were in one place.

Thanks for all you guys do to keep old Tuffs rolling (and sortof making it harder for me to sell new ones. :grins: ) Sometimes I wish you guys would just pony up and make about 500 colored sets.

Sincere regards,

I bleached my white one's for 4 days and they look
alot better but the early metal hubbed ones were
a little off white to begin with! After leaving in the
bleach for 4 days the bleach ate into the front
aluminum hub so I am putting in a flange kit!
I don't recomend bleach for more that a day.

Bart! There was a petition going around a few months ago to try to convince Skyway to make colored tuffs again... anyone know what happened to that?
rick
I've had good results scrubbing them down with a mild bleach solution using a scotch pad.

I would think that submerging them in bleach for days on end would make them brittle, as well as damage the metal parts as mentioned aboved.
lou
I just finished scrubbing the brake area with Westleys and 3M red scuff pad. I little better. Tomorrow I`ll soak em in bleech for a day or two then scrub again before I take em out.

Hi All,
Not to hijack a thread but how do I clean the fading from coloured Tuff's?
Thank's
Howard

Once they are faded thay are shot. Scrub all you want, some of the color might come back.
