Full Version: Dyeing parts DOES work!

Just pulled some parts out of the Rit dye bath. I dyed stuff black. Started with a blue Viscount Aero, white Grafight 2000 pedals, and silver Shimano hub dustcaps. The pedals turned out great, as did the seat. The only gripe about the seat is that the dye has obscured the Viscount Aero stamps on the side. The dustcaps turned black enough, but have an ever so slight bluish tint in the right light. Probably a result of the metallic nature of the silver plastic base material.

I used a big turkey roasting pan on my stove to do the deed. added a bottle of dye to about 2.5 - 3 gallons of water and brought to a light simmer - I was afraid to go too hot for fear of damaging the hub dustcaps. dunked the parts and let the stuff simmer over light heat for an hour, stirring the pot regularly to make sure everything moved around. After turning off the heat, I let the stuff sit overnight in the dye bath. Looks great this morning!

Scratch the above post. I just went back to the checkout on Rit's site, and it states that international orders are not accepted. Bummer.

just dye the seat for only 20 mins, while it simmers, you would still have the viscount logo.

Ive done it few times w/ excellent results

moose ...did you dye a set of tuffs grey yet....

ORB - I sent you photos to post. Thanks.

EMPI - I kept looking at the stuff as it simmered, and I could still see blue is the corners of the seat after 30 min, so I decided to go a bit longer. Maybe I should have just turned off the heat after 20 or 30 min and let it soak, eh?

i used 2 liquid RIT black dye and used it in a medium turkey pot, use all 2 dyes and some water, enough to cover the whole seat, simmer it then put the seat in...in 20 mins you will have your black seat and still have the gold logo on it

Ahh.. too much water and not enough dye was probably why I had to go for more time. I'll know better on the next go-round.
