Did GHP's come with gussets near the headtube - I have looked all over the place, but I cant find any evidence of it.

subwax ...

It does look as though a gusset joining the downtube to the headtube was something incorporated on '85 and on frames. My mini is dated July, 1984 and doesn't have the gusset.

All I can reconcile is that early frames probably had the problem that many frames of the era had ... buckling of the downtube at the headtube juncture ... so, the gusset probably came as an afterthought.

See the ad at GHPBMX.com which has most frames shown WITH the headtube gusset.

I had a GHP in 1985. It was a pro. It was an orange red color and it did in fact:
#1 had a gusset joining the head tube to the down tube.
#2 had the seat stays welded sort of to the side where the seat tube and top tube and chain stays met.
#3 I have seen many GHPs on ebay. They all had the gusset.

I have the option to by an 84 GHP, but I am concerned that I cant find a pic anywhere with the gussets on. Judging by what you guys was, it is not unreasonable to expect gussets on GHP's - is that right? The one is question was number 1300 made in June 1984, according to the serial number.

The GHP pro 1 owned by Jay Stark in the museum '84 - '85 bikes definitely has a gussett.

My GHM0784006 mini definitely does not.

But, like I said ... the common remedy for buckling at the headtube / downtube juncture was the introduction of the small gusset.

Go look at Jay Starks bike ... and look at the frame images on GHPBMX.com ... there are quite a few frames shown with the gusset I've described.

Good luck.

Nice find ... we're looking forward to images of your bike.

I know the first GHP's did not have a gusset on them. Sometime in 84 on, they put them on. I have an 83 that does not have one. There is some pics of some on www.os-bmx.com.

Hi Loopy,

I have had a look for the pics on os-bmx, but have been unable to find them - I can see pics of the GHP's without the gusset, but none with.

I'd like to post a pic - can anyone do it for me?

You know ... maybe this gusset thing is a semantics issue. lol.

When you say gusset, are you thinking the mongoose style thing?

Because the GHP Gusset is at the juncture of the downtube and the very bottom part of the headtube. Just a little triangle thing in there that was added (presumably) to protect against downtube buckling near the headtube.

If you go to the VBMX museum and look at Jay Stark's GHP ... you can see the little gusset clearly as I've described it.
