Hi All,

How's this for a bit of irony....

Not sure if you've read my other posts about an 83 Skyway TA chrome that i've been rebuilding, but anyway, that's what i've been upto since about april 2004 time.

Finally got the last part (seat clamp) and having sent my Frame and handlebars of to re-chromers (see thread in here somewere) about 4 weeks ago, I went to collect if today (third attempt) and guess what......

They can't find the FRAME

The handlebars are still there, not re-chromed i might add, but they have no sign of the frame anywere.

My question is: What should I do, what compensation would you suggest (what is the frame worth on its own)

I'd had the Forks rechromed about 5 weeks or so ago, and got them back without a problem. No this crops up.

thanks for any assistance
regards

Me personally, I'd get a rough value and then ask for more! Lets say the frame is worth $100. To ask for the 100 isn't compensating you for your lost time (spent finding the frame) or anguish suffered when they lost a rare cherished belonging. Having said that, I'd give them some time to locate it. Things do get shuffled around and misplaced.

oh....good luck!

Skyway has NOS frames that were partially assembled and in the past couple of years, they had them finished up.

They are getting, I believe about $300-350 for a frame.

That might give you a price to go by.
raybeard
Bill were they partially welded or just tube sets that were recently welded? What top tube lengths were available on the recently finished frames?

How about $599 w/fork

We have one Skyway TA frame with forks included so order now if you want it. White with red, white and blue stickers. Collectors edition. This is manufactured in 2003 in limited quantity, like 10 units made.

There were some that had rear triangles completed, others had seat stays assembled. I know that they had over 100 frames available. Forks on the other hand were in short supply.

Nothing was new stock, wha they had was left over when they stopped production of the T/As in the mid 1980's.

All had 18.5 toptubes and were T/A Pros. There were no T/A XL's.

Here's what the tubesets looked like -

Back to the topic...

You need to print this page - http://www.americancycle.com/cart.cgi?prod...d=7689464_52891

And the pic - http://www.americancycle.com/cart.cgi?page...d=7689464_52891

And then add a couple hundred bucks to the value of your frame because it was original and more rare compared to the one for $599 which was welded up with nos tubes and a bunch were readily available all over ebay last year.
raybeard
Should these frame be considered NOS? I recall seeing them listed as NOS with no further description. I think the description above is the first time I've seen it mentioned as welded up in 2003.
Ogbyte
thanks for all your feedback everyone. It's really annoyed me this as I was about to start the rebuild.

the frame was in ding free condition, and just needed a fresh chrome job to complement the newly chromed forks.

I'm awaiting a phone call from the owner of the re-chromers tomorrow (Monday 19th July) so will see what he has to say regards finding it or compensating me for it loss.

cheers all

Sounds like it grew legs, either that or they left it in the acid too long and it disolved. I'd get the most I could, and more. No excuse for that kind of sloppy organization as much as they charge.,,,,OS

Thats is so bad! Are you entitled to anything, they normally make you sign something that absolves them of any responsibility for damage etc. I wouldn't know what to do in your situation!

I guess I'd just hope that they turn up.

BTW where did you get it done? (I hope it's not the chromers I use - they have my Landing Gear's at the moment!)

If he can't find your frame, tell him to buy one on eBay, or do it yourself and make him pay. I think he is obliged to accept that, isnt'he? May be ask a lawyer...

Sucks, dude! Rip em a new arse!
Hopefully you will get it back.
Don't stop short of calling the BBB.

Hi all,

appreciate the responses here

Never got that call on the Monday (suprise, suprise), so called them Wednesday to see what's happening.

Guy mentioned something about police, and one of his staff (from what I could makeout) going to them with frame details - fat lot of use that'll be (if the frame had been speeding, the police would be interested, otherwise, forget it )

Will be going round tomorrow to see what is going on and what they intend on doing about it grrrrr

If no joy with finding frame, looks like there are going to be some additional items up on ebay soon (TA forks anyone )

Ogbyte

Oh, and to top it all, the seatclamp was the wrong color double-grrrrrr
Ogbyte
Bit of an update for those interested.

Went down today to see the guy (wife came with me, she loves confrontation )

Anyways, he's phoning someone this tuesday who deals with this stuff (coincidently) and also apprarently, either works for him, or does work for him to see if he can help out with a replacement frame or something.

not a lot we could do at the time, so came home. Whilst in the place wife mentioned us going to the police to report the frame having been stolen.

A couple hours later, whilst at home recieve a call from police say bloke at re-chromers had reported bike stolen and asking me for details etc.

Police asked for it's worth, and I explained that they are collectors items and prices vary quite wildly (anyone have any links to past ebay auctions for Skyways that sold for hi prices??)

So we came to a value of £500 - this needs to be discussed with bloke at re-chromers as this theft is a civil matter and police won't get involved

Both the bloke at re-chromers and myself are down as complaintants (in that frame was in chromers custody and stolen from his premises)

Also police mentioned that blokes insurance should cover any costs.

So, the saga continues.......

Man this situation sucks and i dont mean to sound cold but seriously if you eventually want to get rid of the forks i'm your man

You can't sign away you're rights as far as damages done to you (lost frame) through negligence (loosing the frame). If he doesn't give you the frame, I'd take him to small claims court. Also, start writing down everything that you've done to try to get your frame (who you talked to and when) If you do go to court, get all the prices you can from the internet and so forth as evidence of the value. I'm not sure about this but you could buy a chromed frame just like you expected to get back from the chromer and sue for what you pay minus what he was going to charge you for the chrome job. Whatever you do, don't try to B.S. the judge as to the value, they get pretty nasty when they smell something fishy.
punkndisorderly
Just realized that you're in the U.K., do they have anything like small claims court there? Here you can take anything with damages up to $5000 to court for a small fee and it's just you, the other guy, and the judge.
Ogbyte
hi punkndisorderly

Yep we do have a small claims court - not sure if it's really worth taking it that far, as it all depends on the value of the item.

The bloke has spoken to his solicitor who has said that he should offer a cash figure - i'm awaiting his offer which should come this coming week

Gary

hope everything works out for you .
only good thing i will say is ta`s on ebay have dropped price quite a bit so you could get a whole bike for 300 pounds
Ogbyte
hi stuntmaster,

Doh! that's not to good, was hoping prices were still high

will just wait and see what happens

thanks again all for comments/support

Hey Ogbybte - name and shame the company so that we dont make the same mistake.
graeme
regardless of what they are selling for on ebay i would push him higher. he will have to compensate you fully for finding another and having it shipped to you. i thnk a small claims court in uk would prob agree with that if he was found negligent
graeme
stuntmaster
i didn`t mean for prices to get the guy to pay . i meant ta`s were good prices now if you get a good wedge out of the dude
tznutts
I would ask for $300 US no less. Just for the principle of it.
Bilbil
Hey Ogbyte, keep on letting us know about this nasty business please. I guess you would have done it if you had any news. I hope it will be solved soon. Good Luck !

Ogbyte
Hi guys,

Thanks for all the comments and stuff, glad you lot are around

no further info yet, will be going to see the bloke this saturday to see what is happening.

I did forget to mention to you all that the person he's asking about prices etc, is someone that either works for him or uses him to rechrome stuff as they deal in vintage bikes (choppers, bmx etc) /alarmbellsringing can't say it makes me suspicious or what /alarmbellsoff

Ogbyte
Hi all,

Well, here's an update and a conclusion to this mess (albeit it appears to of worked in my favour somewhat).

spoke to the bloke about compensation and he said he'd pay £250 (appx $450) - I couldn't really argue with that so have accepted and I now have a cheque for the sum of £250.

I also asked for the handlebars to still be chromed which he's doing at present.

This whole saga is a shame really, as the prices are very good, and the results very impressive (albeit, nothing to compare against). It's unfortunate that some thieving [I tried to curse] could potentially ruin a business as, in the end, it wasn't the owner who stole it, but they ultimately have to sort things out and take responsibility.

I think i'd still use them again (because the quality and price was very good), but maybe make them more away of what they have and to secure the items better.

regards
Ogbyte

P.S.
Forgot to mention that I now have a few parts that will be for sale, including:
Pair White Tuff IIs
Skyway TA Forks
Handlebars
MX1000 brakeset (chrome)
Seats
GT Stem
and other bits and pieces available (have lost heart with rebuilding, so will be selling it all - will try ang get photo at some point)

i missed this one,but would like to know what happened.
liviboy
Hey Og

glad you got some kind of positive result out of this whole messy debacle. Your story made me think twice about sending my t/a off to a company and forced me to use someone local (took some finding mind!). As a result I think I paid over the odds - would you mind getting in touch to talk about the prices you were quoted etc?

Shame you've lost the urge to carry on the restoration now but if memory serves you were going to sell the full bike anyway werent you? One concolation is you should make more selling the component parts I imagine?

cheers

steve

bon jovi 83 - check out from the beginning of the thread (basically, had a 83 Skyway TA frame stolen from the re-chromers )

liviboy - cheers, It was a positive result in the end, although it was a local chromers it went missing from (about 4miles from home) so local/far away probably not make any difference.

Yep, that was the plan, refurb/restor it and sell it on, no chance of me doing anything usefull with it (i.e. ride it, show it etc) so better with someone who would.

It took me from april 2004 to August 2004 to obtain parts and just got everything together, and WHAM, the frame dissappears I'd had Forks rechromed etc already to go. You've gotta laugh I suppose, just wasn't meant to be DOH!

i think ALL chrome platers are together to screw all who enter through their doors.too much, too long and "i don't know who you are".
sorry for your loss.that's a pretty good sized piece too loose!
maybe burn his place down???? just a thought.
thanks for filling me in.
