I am currently redoing a chrome Hutch Trick star, and i want to prep it for paint, but i need to get the chrome off. I know sanding it off will work, but i dont have 30 hours of time to do it!! Anybody have any suggestions???

Media blast it... only way to go.

Yep, media blast it!! Should be $25 to $50 to do it. It will take it down to bare metal- and your ready for paint! Good luck

Jeff,
I would'nt be so confident that it would only take 30 hours to "sand" off the chrome (after 30 hours it's more like swearing it off...maybe sooner).
I would only bead blast the frame if the original chrome was VERY sound and not flaking or pitted anywhere...just to make the paint stick to it AND NOT TO BLAST IT COMPLETELY OFF. But if you're going to the trouble of doing a nice job take the f/f to a plater and have them strip the chrome off by dipping it. As a rule this leaves the original copper plating intact, which is a good thing, as the copper will protect your frame better than only paint in the event of a scratch. If you want to go even farther into "anal-dom" after you get back from the plater...clean the frame with some lacquer thinner followed by a 15 mintue soaking with DuPont 3717 Metal Conditioner (keep it wet and don't let it dry out...use Scotchbrite as an applicator pad) followed by a fresh water flush for a couple minutes and then a soaking with the appropriate DuPont Conversion Coating (Phosphate) for ferrous metals. Give it a final flush with fresh water and blow it off with compressed air immediately...the surface should look chalky and dull gray and DAMN UGLY (this means you did it right)
What does all this get you? It gets you a surface that paint will stick to like you won't believe. Also, in the event of a scratch the Conversion coating prevents rust "spider webbing"...not to mention the copper plating that's already on the frame. This is how most major car manufacturers prep car bodies except that they are dipping them.
One last thing...keep in mind that media blasting of any kind is a mild form of shot-peening and can adversly surface harden Chromoly...or so the debate goes...Right-on

A chrome plater will be able to remove the finish by dipping rather than media blasting, leaving the metal undisturbed.
