Hi I have seen them in a tan colour as well with the fins on the back of them.

Yup, orangey-tan pad, silver fins. That's what I always ran.

The silver finned pads are the old, the black finned pads are the new. I have the silver on my JMC and they are slightly different.My LBS has a few pair of the black ones in stock. Are they still being manufactured?

I'm not sure when they started, but according to Sheldon Brown's site, Mathauser's are no longer made. They were definitely around well over 20-25 years ago. I think they were made by Kool-stop. I don't know when they started making the black ones and I definitely don't remember them before '85. The black ones I have seen are shorter and shaped slightly different than the silver ones I have on my old bike. They were the best available at the time. Nothing else was even close. Not even the round finned Kool-stops (Squeeeeeeeeel)!
