The centering device was more of a Japanese/European thing, I do beleive. Kuwaharas had Dia Compe 890s with them as early as 1983.
I also believe that you could get some thicker flat washers to fit them on your flat brake bridge. They came with the rounded washers?
The centering device actually makes it easier to adjust the brake. It just looks funny considering most of us never saw them way back when.

I am not sure if there is a difference, but it says FRONT brake, and I see you are mounting on the rear.........not sure, but might be worth checking out.

thanks guys....and just put the link up as a reference pic. the brake I have is a rear...but there is this piece (I,ve never seen) that is supposed to go behind the brake bridge in front of the round washers... it has an adjusting screw on it and I'm wondering if it,s necessary

It goes in the garbage can.
Find yourself an old MX 1000 brake with a good center bolt. Swap all the hardware over. Trash that stupid centering device bolt. I don't care if it helps the brakes work better. It looks like ****!

raybeard's suggestion sounds like a good 'un.
Had these on my TA in '85, in the UK.
I used the self-centering malarky back then, but have since ditched it, they move the callipers too far from the frame/fork. Look kinda sh!tty.
Get some new centre bolts from anywhere, they're kinda generic.
