Building up a pair of 36h Araya 7b’s to Sunshine high flange flip-flop hubs. What spoke length do I need? Also I need to strip one of the rims from its blue anodized finish whats the best way? We used to use oven cleaner back in the day, but I bet there something better. Thanks All

Go here for proper spoke length, and oven cleaner would be my suggestion.
DT spokes, click on spoke calculator

That a cool calc, but my old school parts aren’t in the drop downs. I suppose when I get my hubs I could measure, but I bet this easy one for someone thats built an old pair of 20" Araya's recently.

hey 32rider; the dt system is great, but like you said, it doesn't have the specs for out of production old school stuff. the most accurate method to determine spoke size i know of is to use a wheelsmith spoke length calculator. if your local shop has one, they can measure your rims and determine length correctly. the old 7b's have a drop center, so the measured diameter is likely smaller than other arayas. if you find out this number, please post it up so that i can help out the other bros if they need a spoke calculation. (i have a wheelsmith system)

if the rim measures 392mm in diameter (my estimate), you will need a 184 spoke length for a 3x front

post up the rear flange diameter if it is different from the front (center of spoke hole to center of spoke hole) and i will run the numbers for you.

you can measure your rims, if you are careful, with a piece of string. put a big knot at one end and thread it through any spoke hole (from the tire side) and then through the spoke hole directly across from it. pull it tight and make a mark on the string exactly where it enters the second spoke hole. take the string out and carefully measure the distance in millimeters. post the number here and i will do the exact calculation for you tomorrow night.

What my spoke calc is showing is if both front and rear are high flange they should be 3x front 185mm and rear should be the same but not totally sure. this was going off the measurments for a dimpled araya 7c for a rim should be the same as the the 7b tho. exact mesurments of the hub and rim will let you know for sure. and if you can post those I would apreciate it so I can update my spoke calc for the rim and hubs

Hey if your looking for the magic number for high flange sunshine hubs and 7B's here it is 7 5/8" just convert it by 25.4 and it arrives to 193.I laced them cross 4 superior strength and style. It has been done for several peers so it is proven. If you want cross three go 7.28" hope it works out
32rider
Thanks, looks like 185 is my magic number for 3x. I'm going to work on the blue 7b tonight so I'll try to measure it to be sure as I think it's a 7b second gen. as it was on my brothers Laguna around 79. I also have the Laguna forks if anyone interested in them, not sure where the rest of the bike went.
32rider
I measured the 7B across with a piece of string as Dave described 15.25” so 15.25 *25.4 = 387.35m. Still waiting to receive my hubs so no hub measurements yet.

And as far as your second question, I think we've probably all used oven cleaner back in the day, but it is some caustic stuff and will compromise the metal integrity. Take it to an anodizer and have them remove it. Less mess, less fuss, no trubs.

center to center on the spokes on a sunshine lg flange hub = 62.48mm or 2.460 easy money bro

32, I've ordered a lot of spokes from Dan's Competition. If you call them and tell them what rim
and hub combination you have, they usually have enough reference material to send you the correct
length spoke. Good luck.

I have spokes that I want to replace. Can I determine what length they are by simply measuring end to end or is there another way to determine their length?

A spoke length ruler is handy and if I recall about 10 bucks. Park tools. There is a hole where you stick the elbow in and pull it taught to measure the spoke length. Or just measure from the bend to the tip and convert to mm. Or take them to the LBS, they can measure them for you in a second.

thanks
