When doing a restore should you restore the bike with all original pieces? Is it looked down on if you use pieces from the same era instead of original?

What are the "rules" or "guidelines"? This is my first restore project. Skyway TA.

Thanks,
Tommy

Call me more of a "Purist" Ya Right

Buold the bike the way you like. If you can afford Era Correct Peices, Even Better.

I know I don't look at a build the same way with a bunch of new school parts on it. But hey, Thats just me.

Guess that why I have sooooo few complete bikes.

It's your bike and your cash, do it your way...

Me, I'm gonna use era correct pieces on my 1980 Cycle Pro Macho, and 1983 Nora Cup GT.

My 1998 Quadangle is gonna be weird, a lot of new school for the obvious reasons (threadless forks, bearings, stems etc) and a LOT of old school (rims, cranks etc) depending on what all I find, and my budget allows as I build it.

When I see a person ask about original parts, I always go what were they?

I mean except for my Cycle Pro Macho (my first bmx bike) and my Schwinn Sting (my third bmx bike) everything else was bought part by part. Those were my only two complete bikes.

There were a lot of companies that never offered complete bikes. And a lot of the ones that did, more often or not, cut corners in one place or another to assemble the entire package to meet a specific price point.

I prefer era correct on old bikes, but it depends on what you are building also. If it's purely as a show bike, to me era correct parts are critical. If it's a rider, then I'd be more worried about durability, and may opt for some newer parts in some areas.

The bottom line: it's yours. It's like a painting canvass that is new. What you do with it is up to you. And if you don't like something originally, you can change some stuff, or completely redo it at any given time.

Have fun!
