I recently purchased a set of 28 hole cook bros hubs. The problem I have is that on the rear hub one flange has 14 hole while the other has 18 holes. The flange that has 18 holes is the one that holdes the freewheel. The front hub both flanges are 14 holes. Could someone shed some light on why cook made the rear hub with an 14 hole flange on one side and a 18 hole for the freewheel? I spoke with stratbike and he thought that was unusual but likely that is the way they made them. Also is it possible to lace a wheel with that spoke combination? I guess you would have to skip 4 of the holes when lacing the spokes. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

I will admit that I'm not 'in the know' about CBR hubs, other than the 36's I had when I was a youngsta', but this sure sounds fishy. If you were to 'skip holes', you would have to lace four holes, skip one, lace three holes, skip one, lace four, skip one, lace three, skip one, for it to even out. That would flat look weird, and would not, in my opinion, be consistent with CBR, or any other hub manufacturer, for that matter. The alternative of lacing that hub to a 32H rim, would be a nightmare, in of itself. Added to that, I would assume that, keeping the darn thing true, would be a near-to-impossibility, given that the spoke tension would be greater on the 14 side, than the 18.
Without saying it, I think you know what I'm getting at. However, I will hold my thoughts, hoping someone will prove me wrong, as I've been looking for CBR's for a long time, now, and would hate to ruin your score.

Simple..... the hub was a mistake that finally made it to your hands. The hub was being made with 28H and it was misplaced moved whatever and the second side during manufacturing was drilled with the wrong qt of holes. The only thing that you can do is to lace it up on a 28 h rim and forget bout the fact that you had to skip 4 of the holes on the side. You never, never, never want to skip holes in a rim when lacing it up... Why...? Rims are made to take a specific amount of stress that is determined by the manufactures engineer. Skipping holes is a bad idea... Ziggy

thanks for the insight guy's. I figured it was a mistake that some how slipped through final inspection. It is truely a genuine cook hub just like the front. I spoke with stratbike on the issue and he also thinks it was a mistake that was overlooked. I will be laceing it to a 28 hole rim soon and will have pics once completed.
