I recently acquired a 2001 Specialized Hemi Pro XL frame. I have a few questions.

The rear dropouts look like they may require some special spacers or tensioners on the inside of the frame rails. If anybody has a set for sale, or can point me in a direction, I'd appreciate it.

I assume it takes a 1 1/8" threadless fork. How long does the steerer tube need to be for this frame? Any recommendation on proper forks to match this frame? I've been considering Hanebrink triple clamp forks. I've also been considering SE Landing Gear, and a pair of Standard forks with 990 mounts... I know I've read in the past that Landing Gear in particular come with different length steerer tubes for the PK and Quad frames, so that's what I am worried about with this frame. I don't want to waste money on forks with too short of a steerer tube.

Lastly I'd like to get this frame fresh powder coated. Does anybody have a source for decals for this particular frame?

Here is a pic so you can see what frame I am talking about, regarding the decals...

Sprinter,

The inside of the rail is for a chain tensioner but I believe you can get away from using it. I will look at my cruiser and get back to you. I will also measure the steerer tube length on the cruiser. They are the same length.

Thanks for taking the time to check that out for me I appreciate it!!!

Spinter,

I havn't forgot about you. With work and getting ready to go the the Canadian Grands, I havn't had a chance to get the bike out. I will get the info ASAP

Sprinter,

The steerer tube on my cruiser is 6.5 inches and that leaves a lot of room. As for the drop outs, it looks like you have 2 choices. The first is to find the tensioners that go with the bike. Your Specialized dealer would be the one to talk to. The other option would be to add another 15 mm nut to your axel. It looks like that would fit into the grove.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Looks like finding the correct tensioners is my only real option, or washers... Since I am planning on putting a set of Spin 3 spoke wheels on it. Looking at the Spins, it doesn't look like adding a nut is really possible with the spacers they already have in place.

Thanks again for the info I appreciate it friend!

Good luck! The Spin 3 spoke wheels will look awsome on this frame.

I'll be sure to post some pics when we get it all together. Won a Specialized Stem on eBay last night for it. Still looking for the correct tensioners. I E-mailed a few specialized dealers, the two closest to where I live, and am still waiting for a reply.

Since you have a similar cruiser, is there a dealer close to you? If so is there a possibility I could get you to check into the possibility of getting tensioners for my frame thru them?

Also still searching for decals.

I want to get it freshly powder coated, but my girlfriend says it's ok to her as is. I'm building an Aluminum Quadangle for me, so this is hers... But I think I might yet win the powder coating debate

Any recommendation on forks? My original choice was Hanebrink triple clamp forks, but I have to look into whether or not the spin rims will be compatible with the forks.

The shop that I bought my cruiser through went out of business after the owner was caught doing bad things with kids, but another dealer close buy may have something. I will check, but it may take a few days. As for forks, I am running what came on the bike. The only thing that I have changed is the gears.

No hurry!

All I have for the bike at the moment, is the frame, and wheels, and the stem is on the way... It's definitely gonna take me a few weeks/months to build, hopefully before winter is over...

But I figured the sooner I started looking for the harder to find items, the better chance I had of getting them before I am actually sitting here saying "if I only had _____ the bike would now be done" - done that too many times with other things in the past

Just whenever you'd get the chance to check for me, that's fine. I appreciate your help, and am in no hurry whatsoever.

Hey Tim, right now in the mail are all the washers I could find for those Spins. Most of my stuff is at my mothers house and she moves stuff around alot, sorry it took so long. Also included are the Spin paperwork that came with them. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Later. PK

Sprinter, I've got my LBS checking to see if they can get the tensioners through Specialized. If you can't find them, another possibility is to have one of your local machine shops either make some or at least make a spacer to fit in the grove. If it comes to this, let me know and I can e-mail you what they look like.

Hey Alex, thanks man, I appreciate that you remembered! I've been told a lot of things by a lot of people over the years... It's nice when people stand by their word, thank you.

Unfortunately they are still not what I am looking for. No complaints my friend, I'm still completely satisified with the deal. Just letting you know is all.

From the looks of things, the set you mailed me, is for converting the 3/8 pieces to 14 mm dropouts. All the silver spacers etc that were on the wheels, fit a 3/8 dropout. The black spacers you mailed will adapt the 3/8 to 14mm.

So my original problem still exists, I still do not have the silver 3/8 spacers/washers for the front Spin wheel.

I'm sure I'll figure something out. Who knows I may yet end up with a fork with 14 mm dropouts, haven't decided on a specific fork yet for the Hemi. I think the 14 mm adapters would work ok with a 14 mm fork, even without the original 3/8 washers.

I originally bought then for my aluminum Quad, but have since decided to put them on my girlfriend's Hemi. I bought a set of silver NOS Weinmann (Araya 7b type) rims. And am planning on black Chris King cassette hubs for them. Old school meets new school I guess... I always loved how the old 7b rims looked.

Also got a set of silver NOS Araya 7x rims...
And my original plans were for Graphite Tuff Wheels, which I've wanted since childhood, and may still go for...

Yes I AM worse than a woman trying to decide what shoes to wear for a date! lmao
