I have to say I agree with Kerry on the Hutch issue. I rode Hutch framesets and used their parts for four years. Bitd I only broke two sets of Pro bars and a couple of ti rear axles. The ti axles were not designed for freestyle, one switch to the Hutch hollow chromoly axle installed in my mag hub fixed that. I am still riding the same hub and axle that I bought in 85 to this day. There stuff (crank spindle not included) made all the way up to 85 is nice. It did not really get more exotic. I also think the Trick Star not only looks good, but rides very well. It is one of the top platforms for freestyle. I for one would not touch Hutch grips bitd. That said, I do have a set of blue Hutch grips on my all original Judge build. In this case, the grips definetly go with the bike. I like the way the grips say Hutch and have the H on the ends. Hutch was a proud man, every part he made has Hutch stuck or molded on it. On all my other Hutch builds I am using Mushrooms which is what I used bitd. I have to admit though, I am leaning towards wanting black Hutch grips on my red build to replace the black Mushrooms. I will never ride it, so my hands will be spared. I just like the way they say Hutch on them. Jeff, the Rad Kaps I have seen have gone as high as 350ish. I do not know what they cost bitd, so they could have a similar cost/profit ratio.

Hutch stuff was excellent equipment till the exchange --- i just bust balls because its was such the mainstream arrogant bling manufacturer of the era - the kanye west of bmx, diamond studded everything w/mad, in your space, 9 page advertisments in every publication printed ..... but it is what it is and they did do it right (they made it a status symbol, but that didn't detract the fact they were a well designed machine) ..... but if anyone can bust a Hutchees nards, a JMCappreciator can.

My mistake. What I meant was the 87' stuff was crap. All that Hi-Caliber stuff. And the Tai frames. It looked cool, but didn't last long.
Thlayli
I... I actually really liked the Hi-Caliber pedals. They were cheap platform pedals that served me very well when I couldn't afford the good stuff.

Yup, me too. I had a pair of those and they worked great for flat, ramps, street, whatever... in fact they are the only Hutch part I ever owned!
Spicoli
I like the pedals too, they just seemed much better suited for freestyle or street than the exotic and vicious bear traps...
Bedlam Bikes
I've yet to ever see a Tiawanese Trick Star frame and fork....anyone here have one?

And dare I say it?

I think the Japanese Trick Stars are BETTER than the USA ones. I've seen a lot of USA frames where the top tube platform is all over the place. Uneven/unsymmetrical tubing, unequal cut offs, etc... some of them are pretty bad.
When I rode in the 80's I broke my USA frame and it was warrantied by Hutch and replaced with a Jap. frameset. That one never broke and it took more abuse than the USA one I had. (my showbike is a USA frame but it looks pretty clean)

I have a long history with Hutch stuff from when I rode.... Their seatclamps in chrome were junk. Twice I tighetened two different ones only to see all the chrome flake off in mere seconds! (I tightened my clamps HARD)
The Hutch Western stems made an abnoxious creaking sound.
Their tires and grips were amongst the worst on the market.

Trick Stars were the best goemetry made bikes in the 80's for "all around" riding. Ramps and flat - they were awesome! (Thanks Woody)

Their bars and seat posts were great. Never had any problems.
When I used to race, I rode an Expert frame which I never had any problems with either. And I was more of jumper doing Henderson and 360's etc... than a winner at racing! It took a ton of abuse.

I never used Hutch hubs, cranks or bear traps because I couldnt afford them - so I have no feedback from experience on that stuff.
BOB-O
anything hutch.
bhaverchuck
Most of the "vintage" bmx bikes/parts are way overpriced. I decided not to do a Haro master build becuase the prices are just insane. Ebay is part to blame for the pricing. Grips for 400.00? Just plain ignorant. Count me out.
chromey
Yeah. I've been running 2 sets of Hi-Caliber pedals for a very long time... they're great pedals.. both sets have the center outside (cage-looking ) part broken off... but that wasn't important to the pedal anyway...

It's odd that some of the best hutch stuff. is the least sought after.... at least parts-wise.

But a lot of the hutch stuff was kind of eccentric anyway.
So I guess it makes sense.
mr coasterbrake
the Hi-Caliber pedals were actually made by SR, so they were a pretty decent quality. some other Hi-Cal products were made by reputable manufacturers, too.

some HI-Cal stuff nobody would even buy today if they knew what it really was with a Hutch paint job

that makes total sense... SR made great stuff.

plus... they loooooved Aluminum.
TrickStarRick
HMM, SR pedals seem to remember Eddie Fiola with bone stock GT one piece SR cranks and pedals doing massive air at the Pipeline...Still have my Hutch Hi Cal pedals and SR cosmo-lite cranks... best bang for the buck BITD...
K-Dog
well it is nice to know old BMXers grew up to have well paying jobs
RealDeal
Hey chromey thanks for cleaning the drool off my 360 air at brian p's. I wouldn't have known if you didn't say anything. The torkers weren't the most sought, but for a 6'3" person there nice and roomy.

As for the topic in discussion i would like to enventully build a hutch of some sort, but i definetly won't be spending top dollar to equip it with all hutch parts. There are plenty of companies out there that made good quality parts that aren't gonna break the bank. I mean i give props to those who do spend top dollar, they are definetly nice to look at.
D
Ummmm, the Haro Sport with no framestand?

That one shows up and we'll see some REAL bidding.

You KNOW its sitting in somebody's basement somewhere.....
invisibleman1
those grips suk too, like holding on to treebark.

Same guy who grabbed these only a month ago:

Another Black Hutch Grip Auction

Let's just say in July, he bought more than this entire forum has in 'bmx blow' money combined!

High bids

Someone needs to invite him here, and lets do an intervention.

Seeing that high bid did just that....

I was wondering about that plate ? If it is a real Haro. Didn't those plates say " SERIES ONE " on the side where you zip tied it by the brake levers ??

$138 for a REPRO pad set. $685 for grips (and $471).

Someone inherited something, I'm getting the picture.

Also following the muscle car scene, I notice the same thing happens with Hemicudas and such, where the prices go huge. Someone gets a nice inheritance and starts living out their dreams.
meddling kid
I think the early series one came without the lettering on it's "arms". I think it did have teh Bob Haro signature on the back though..........

last I heard these go for a ridiculous amount. Note they are not your normal Hutch beartraps.

It IS a lot of money!! But unlike something such as Hutch grips, MKS Grafights were an awesome product from the 1980's. They were the pedal of choice for a LOT of decent freestylers for obvious reasons. Only a poser might think otherwise...

That is crazy, I recently got a Hutch Pro Racer off Craigslist and it came with those same pedals. Those are the first things I want to get rid of along with the CW pro bars. I bought a pair BITD, used them for a day or two, hated them and then traded them to a friend for the first two issues of Bicycles and Dirt magazine. I still have those 2 issues.

Tgis is a great thread...LOOK at the PRICES now!!!! over a year or soooo later...damn!!!!

hutch hi-calibers

and thats why I like GT, kick a$$ rides, and cheap cheap cheap! I dont care if its GT, Ill ride anything, even a Haaaarrooo, heheh, what rivalries are there if any? like did you beat up all the kids on Pink Mongooses? Purple Diamond Back get you testy? Poke a Norco guy in the eye? GT vs Haro? Redline vs everything? did you ever look over at the guy next to you on the line, look down at his ride and laugh, then lose to him..? heheh, I laughed at a guy on his GT Vertigo, who was riding the track for fun, and he left us behind at the first turn...go figure..
agentheinz
It's what ya do with it...A guy who is really good can win races on a Next. Take a complete POS slapped together guitar all beat to hell, only put it in the ownership of one Edward Van Halen, and a legend is born...Repros for sale, $15,000. LOL!!! The apocryphal (or is it?) story of the guy who beat a Hemi car with a slant six. Truth is stranger than fiction.

OK, I'm rambling...

But yeah, people are still paying for old BMX, even in these times.
PUSH2VERTICAL
The Hi-Cal pedals are ok ...but these things have no grip and when they get wet it's all over. I use these on my raider/racer restores just to stay with "hutch" parts - but i could not imagine them being used to race/moto/jump. I guess for freestyle they work ok, they don't rip your leg apart like some other brands. A better clover leaf pedal if you will.

The one part I cannot understand paying $$ for are Motomags.
psammy
phewww.....glad i got all this OS bmx out of my system back in the '80's....i couldn't afford it now.....
zoomerica
The Hutches above, they have been handled. Two words...Shamrock Pedals.....

I don't get that either. for me, where I grew up, they were the bane of existance. you wouldn't be caught DEAD with a set on your bike. Mongoose RULED the roost in our area of Detroit in the late 70's/early 80's, but motomags just sucked. you begged your parents to let you get ANY other wheel.

just my .02c.......

Not the same pedals. The ones we are talking about are the original grafight X pedals those are the later models.
freestyl
How about OG graphites at 2K to 3K range for nos examples. I agree Hutch stuff is expensive, trust me I wish it wasn't. I've noticed JMC stuff pretty much across the board though is as expensive as any thing Hutch has if not more.
