Ok this is going to be my 1st trip to Rockford and I don't know what bike to take. I am flying so one is all that I can bring. I had been thinking about taking my 93 S&M Holmes I just got and luv, but now with all the hype I wanna take my 84 Haro master. The delema is I would be kinda nervous what could happen to my Haro during the trip, you always hear horror stories about packages getting abused , lost or stolen

Bring the Haro Master and have Bob sign it. Packing - lots of pipe insulation, zip tie it together, and double box the bike boxes. Put the small parts in a small box and seal after wrapping everything separate, most importantly, take pictures and insure it.

I like the Bob signature idea.... I am sure the dood will be signing Haro's aplenty this weekend!!

TIP FOR ALL HARO PEOPLE: Buy a Sharpie in a color that'll match your bike!!!!

I would say HARO as well!

Last year I flew my GJS BIG TUBE from Germany to Rockford.
I didn't had a nonstop flight, so the possibility was even higher the bike gets lost.

Like you, I were really anxious about the transportation.

At the security check, they unwraped my bike box (I used a 24" for my 20" bike) and they didn't let me helping them, to get all parts back in the right positon. I taped the box all over quite often at the hotel before I flew home , and then they retaped it with just one single layer.

Can't remember if it was insured, but the problem is, you don't wanna get the money if the bike gets lost. It will take you probabley years to rebuild a similar bike out of new/used parts. If you bought your bike BITD, you can't simply replace it. I guess you know what I mean.

I'm still not sure, if I can make it this time, but if so, I thought about carrying my took apart bike as hand luggage.

Don't forget to let the air out of the tires!

OK BAD NEWS and I am TOTALLY BUMMED OUT !!!! Continental airlines considers a bike flight bag a oversized box. In fact according to the sizing chart a bike FRAME box is barely small enough not to be considered oversize. So to bring the Haro it will be a service charge of $97.00 .. EACHWAY

Continental Airlines says a standard box con not exceed 61 liniar inches. Whcih would be

35" long , for the frame with no wheels on it.
21" tall for the wheels.
5" wide , " yeah right" ?

See if any of your local bike shops rent a bike case called, Sunn. It looks like a big suitcase, not obvious like most bike cases. They are sold to the dealers by a distrubutor called J&B Importers.

I have flown with this case about 5 times and they never evened questioned me if it was a bike or not. They just asked me if I was going somewhere for a long time with "this big suitcase."

Not all shops rent cases, but I'm sure someone in Houston probably does. Good luck and see you Saturday!

OK, I made a little error in the name. It is Sun Lite.

Here's the website and you can see the suitcase:

http://www.sunlitecycling.com/site/index.htm

The site is a Flash player site, so I can't link right to the suitcase. To get there, click on BAGS, then drop down to "Other." At the third row all the way to the right is the Bike Suitcase. Click on that and viola, this is what you want - it works for me!!!

It is super durable too. I had a $5000 carbon fiber road bike in it and it seem to get tossed around a lot by the scrapes on the outside of the case, but the inside was perfect. Lots of foam padding to protect the bike.

OK, so bring the HARO!!!!
