They weren't enough to stop him from hitting the wall, LOL...Check the fork!

Yeah, they were popular on MTBs for a little bit there.

I did notice the bent forks.

The brakes seem to be the same ones that Hutch used on the special "Woody Brake" Trick Stars, with the hole impressions on the brake arms. They're hard to find complete and intact, so I thought someone might buy the bike just for the brakes.

If someone does, I'd buy the frame from them to build into a BMX cruiser type thing....

that's where i got most of my rollercams...off wrecked Cannondales.

the combination of a rather weak fork, super-strong brakes and the extra heating near the crown for the mounts was a recipe for bent forks. I can't even imagine how many of those forks we replaced (with canti forks) at the shop in the '80s. a lot of them bent right at the brake posts.

What the difference between these and the Hutch version? The only difference appears to be the U-shaped bracket that Hutch added, which sometimes had "H U T C H" engraved into it and sometimes didn't. The arms appear to be the same.

Here is the hutch version.

Here is the roller cam brake they used. Notice the captured rollers. It ran linear springs vs. the coil type like the 990's and other rollercams. This was the beefiest version Suntour made.

Another note, early versions of Suntour were adapting the Cunningham/Wilderness trail bikes -rollercam brake designs. Later giving Cunningham credit for the design. (or a piece of the action)

He's a neat website where you can explore other cam brakes and cantilever designs on old bikes. Old Brakes
