I didn't know the production numbers were this low. 200-300 of them ever made, wow! If true, that would give it a lower production run than the Free Agent Free Flight which has a confirmed run of 300 total batched in three groups of 100.

Product rare vs. survivor rare. Man...there seem to be a whole lot more prostylers around than luggage rack vectors or cw's....i've seen at least 4 on ebay in the past 6 months....in addition to the half dozen or so that get post here....mine, kristevin's, a couple of others i forget who has...

I can't believe that some of these great framesets were built in such low numbers. I know in the U.K. everybody lusted after the Hutch's and Haro's but I thought in the U.S. more of the other frames would have been bought as something different.
Sorry I don't mean to hijack this post, but does any body know how many Free Agent Freeflites were built with Campy dropouts?

Hudson,
A lot of Prostylers popped up on Ebay this past year, but prior to that, we would be lucky to find one frameset. Would love to know the production numbers on the luggage racks.
Rad, I know that Free Agent made three production runs of 100. I'm guessing the first run had high forks pegs, second run had upper fork pegs and the last run had low fork pegs (like VDC and GHP). As far as the Campy dropouts, I doubt they made 100 of them. I'll dig around and hopefully receive a solid answer.

Well, I wonder what the typical production number is for any frame set of any make would be? Or completes?

Jun 4 2007, 07:15 AM
Stephen good question ...one would think that companies like GT, Dyno, Haro, Redline, Hutch were the big companies that made thousands of there models others like what James has mentioned probably were very few ....so why is it that certain models like the 86'world tour are rare?
I'm going to offically call it "stupid parent decision" by throwing out there kids old bike because well it was just hanging around and no one was using it
So the new phrase is "SPD"
just imagine if we could really find out how many of these great bikes have been trashed and sent to the scrap heep?
any comments?

Statistically, I've been noticing a survival rate of less than 5% on the first gen's. Is this gospel, no, but it's been consistent.
So if they made 300 Prostylers, do we know, located, or own 15? Think about it and call it in with collectors.
Free Agent, 300 made, less than 8 known to exist????
VDC, less than 12 known to exist????
GHP, less than 5 completes known to exist with 2 orphans.
1st gen Vectors, less than 10 known to exist?
1st gen Haro Freestylers, 2 or 3 known to exist.
1st gen. Haro Masters......????
1st gen. Haro Sports, less than 3?
Buff CW, 300-500 made, but less than 10 or 15 known to exist.
Exhibitionist, less than 15-20 known to exist?

How about torker freestylists...only what...4 f/f sets exist? more frames only....

Jun 4 2007, 09:48 AM
Keep in mind that the Profile freestyle frames were both comparatively expensive and also not very popular, BITD. As a result, I would guess that a disproportionate amount of them sat languishing in bike shops and eventually went into dead stock and were "discovered" 15+ years later, which improved their survival rates. I can remember a local bike shop growing up that had a f&f for what seemed like years.

I'm going to reserve the opinion that there were more than 300 Prostylers made. Like Hudson said, I've seen twice as many of them as I've seen Free Agents, Vectors, and CW luggage racks combined.

I don't get it, James. Could you elaborate? I thought there were quite a few of these, and the generations started with the Master. How many generations of the original freestyler, and what is the difference?

Good thinking jjmcd (just read your post). I hadn't considered the fact that many of them I've seen are NOS. Kinda like all the NOS quad freestylers...I don't think I've ever seen a survivor of one of those.

There are two generations of the Haro Freestyler. The difference is there is no weld under the headtube gusset and all 3 of the first gens have been made in '82.

arent there 3 different versions (generations) of vector freestyle f/f's? and all of them pretty rare?

They are 3 different versions of the Vector freestyle:
- Luggage rack
- modifiied luggage rack frameset
- twin top tube

Do you have any pics to show the differences in the Vectors and their respective years made, James? Also, were there differences in the corresponding stickers for each one?
Thanks in advance.

For the record, Earl once told me he has around 7 or 8 NOS Profile Prostyler framesets still in the box.
How about the first gen MCS Stylers?
jjmcd hit the nail on the head with this. NONE of these bikes were popular so their average shelf life was a long, long, long time.

Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to start some threads similar to the Haro serial number register thread on these "scarce" or "rare" framesets.
It would be truly interesting to see just how many of these framesets are confirmed of their existance and accounted for.
Your 2nd gen Styler and mine are almost twins, BP.

There are still many untapped resources in this hobby, that will come to fruition as it grows.
I'll elaborate...
This past winter I went to visit family in the midwest, and, I came accross two guys my brother knows that are BMX pack rats to the enth degree.
Guys that have no interest in ebay, vbmx, the internet, or, even restoring/rebuilding what they have in their possesion. And will part with little or nothing of what they have!
In two short stints at each guys house I walked away with gems, and barely scratched the surface at either place.
They wouldn't let me dig any deeper. No amount of salesman persuasion and/or offers of cash will get either of these guys to budge.
I was able to get a set of Vector bars mounted on a Western H stem from one guy, because it was one of the first things in eyeshot when I walked into his garage.
I somehow alligator wrestled them away from the guy, but he quickly scurried me away and said he was no longer interested in showing me or selling anything else he had to me.
A quick glance at the rafters of his garage promised a gold rush.
You're probably wondering this guys deal is, well according to him since about 1991 he's been trashpicking BMX parts from the front of homes in Suburban Cleveland, and, it is his hobby.
And that is the extent of it, no restoring, cleaning etc. Just trash pick and stockpile. Otherwise his energy is devoted to his harley and S10 drag pickup.
The other guy was easier to deal with and was an employee of a well established bike shop in the 80's/90's. My brother swapped some wheels & tires off of an old Chevy with this guy in exchange for "some old bike parts".
I was the lucky recipient of "some old bike parts", and, according to my brother the stuff I got is a drop in the bucket. I'm yet to see the attic of his house.
The point I'm making is that no matter how much we chase, covet, document, collect, restore, etc. That $5 thrift store redline squareback may be right up the street from your house as I type these words.

Pep, Most everyone agrees with you on this. BUT there is no denying the guy has the goods. Dealing with him may be super-difficult but the bottom line is the man has the goods. LOTS and LOTS of goods. I have no idea why he doesn't just list stuff with a .99 opening bid and make a couple of million while doing it. I can't even begin to understand why he holds back...but to each their own I guess. Nonetheless, I am confident in saying that he'd clear seven figures NO PROBLEM if he had a fire sale.

Wow! What a fun thread!
James, that last shot of the Vector with the S-bend seat stays has to be INCREDIBLY RARE! My eyes popped out of my head when I saw that! Never seen one of those before!
I think this could be one of the best threads in the Freestyle section - show all the rarest bikes and then account for how many still exist.
Keep this one rocking!

James,
Thanks for posting those pics. What is the timeline on them? 1984 / 1984 / 1985?
Also; where would a guy find a stickerset like the ones in the first pic of yours????
twintoptuber
Jun 7 2007, 05:26 PM
I would be willing to make exact reproductions of the first gen. Vector decals with the following:
- each set will have the standard C4 stamp/ID mark
- sold in complete sets only
- need at least 5 buyers to make them affordable
I have one buyer already and been wanting to help him for a long time now, but the cost for one set is too costly. If I had to take a shot at cost per set, probably looking at $65 (could be more or less) since I would want them to be done right.
If we can get four others to pledge the project, I'll do my best to get them started today. If you also would like, I can have the handlebar decals made as well for a complete package set. You may also want to send the framesets to C4 Labs for a perfect powdercoating.

I'm not too sure on the timeline, but I think we have 1984, early '85, '86? I say early '85 on the second gen. because it follows the same path as the CW freestylers with regards to the luggage rack.
The second gen. in the pic is the only one I have ever seen. I know the first gen was offered in 3 different styles/colors, sort of..... A few years ago, I was told the third pic was the first model and starting backwards, but I'm 100% it's the third gen.
