Full Version: How to spot a Hutch repro part?

Being a "hutch FAN" and not a Hutch expert as well as being new to the game (been out of bmx bikes for about 20 years), do you have any advice for me on how to avoid buying repro crap or how to spot it? Is there certain things that are reproduced more than others? I just bought a "NOS" pair of replacement cages for my Hutch pedals and I was thinking that they would be easy to reproduce since there is no stamp on them or any discerning markings. I couldn't, but I am sure someone with the right tools and metal know how would find it easy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you have to ask around be very carefull alot of fake stuff out there ask alot of questions where did you get the cages from ?

302zapper cages = repro's.

He should stamp a little 'zap' on the inside of them...

Haney's stuff is top of the line.....

Thanks again for your help, illmatic. I bought them on ebay from slickone1770. I don't know if he is a member here or not and I can't tell you his real name. I think I actually threw the box they came in out already. He states that he gets his stuff directly from Jeff Haney, but I have no idea if that is true or not. It very well could be. I am not calling anyone a liar. I am just trying to figure out how I protect myself, since I am new in this arena of bicycles. If this were time trial bikes, road bikes or even mountain bikes I would know my way around, but not here, not yet. I suppose there are items that are easier to reproduce than others. I would imagine a seat post is something to watch for. There is one eBayer that seems to always have a "NOS" chrome laid back Hutch seat post for sale...hmm.

302zapper is who always seems to have a NOS post for sale. I was skeptical to say the least. Again, I wasn't trying to say that "slickone1770" sold me anything that I thought was a repro, but I didn't know how to spot it even if he/she had and just wanted to educate myself before buying other items. I really appreciate all of your information...you guys are the best! This is my first posting on this forum. I have been lurking and learning for months now. Thanks!

One of our members is going to school us on spotting repop Aerospeed cranks as well, watch for that.

Also there have been posts concerning the repro stems, bottom line is if you have a decent photo and a question, just ask! Lotta good folks here who have lots of info for ya. Welcome to VBMX!
