Ok, I have what I'm told is an Epoch "freestyle" (works with the GYRO) HS and was hoping to see a picture of exactly how it goes together with a GYRO.
Before I start banging parts together I'd prefer to make sure it will work. I'd hate to scratch my new powder by having to remove parts because they won't work.
Thanks,
J

Jamison,
There are three different dustcaps (that cover the spring-loaded mechanism). The plastic won't work with a Gyro. The metal dustcap that overlaps the bearing cup like an overbite also will not work with a Gyro. You need the metal cap with the same diameter as the bearing cup, so the Gyro bearing mechanism has clearance when traveling up and down.
With the correct dustcap, installation is no different than with a standard headset. However, lacking the specified dustcap, many a rider back in the day just went without it.
Epoch. Best damn headset, ever.

Josh, where have you been? Glad to see you're still around.
Ok, the cap I have is way smaller than I remember- the big plastic ones- and it is metal as it's been powdercoated.
I'll head downstairs and see if it overlaps or not.
Thanks,
J

Hey, should have asked me. You have the correct gyro/rotor version.
1 mount the cups and fork race.
2 grease bearings and put together
3 remove the spring from the adjusting piece. note the direction of the spring and how the outer piece catches the adjusting piece
4 handtighten the adjuster piece down piece down.
5. put the spring on in so it matches the way you took it off. Put the inner piece of the spring in the dead spot of the fork and push the spring all the way do down.
6.now wind the spring and try not to loose your adjustment of your adjusting cup. when you get it wound to the point of where you can push the spring flush with the adjusting cup like it was when you started. I like to use a mini flat head screwdriver to do this.
7. check your freeplay. If it needs more or less you will have to release the outer portion of the spring and adjust the adjusting cup.
8. once you have it adjusted put the alloy cover on then tighten down the top nut. Hit me up if you have any problem. Chris

Chris- I wasn't in disbelief that it would work but I wanted to make sure as I had seen several different versions and didn't want to wreck the powder messing around.
I do need to use a different crown race as the one you sent is a bit too loose and I don't want to shim it. It's ok though as I had a beartrap set with a few missing parts.
Canuck, did you just tear it all down to show me some pix? If so, that's just awesome- way too much work for the question but awesome.
Thanks as always,
Jamison

Anyone have any tips about setting up the spring? I have never put one of these together, just taken them apart.

Jamison,
Some one a couple of years ago had the same question and I tore it down then. I had the pics up on my webspace still and re-used them.
Rimspoke you are right that isn't Phil's grease, it is a poor imitation, but the only grease I had on hand. That bike is due for a tear down and restore. It was a survivor 1987 GT Pro Freestyle Tour that belonged to a friend of mine who graciously donated it to me for some beer and wings. Since he lives in Korea I haven't had the opportunity to pay him back.
