thats a 990 mount cable hanger...the 87-88 had 990 mounts, and the 85-86 just used standard calipers, so theres no mounts or hangers on the earlier ones...

I'm pretty sure the frame on the left is pre-88, and the one on the right is from '88. That's the cable mount for a 990 isn't it?

close but not quite right, each year is in fact different.
I'll have to post up some pics for you gents in the morn. I just got in from the mountains and I need to get situated
pics and explanation coming soon
Terrance you have an 88 there with the 990 cable guide and I would need another angle pic on the brake bridge to ID the year on the other one
Does it have weep holes in the brake bridge ?

There is no such thing as saying "pre" anything. If there is a serial number that is a 1987 number and it obviously a 1988 model since there are rear 990 mounts, then it is an 88 that was just "produced" at the end of 1987, early 1988.
Redline is not going to just dead stop stamping the 1987 numbers to make the next year....1988, and they are not going to know the quantity of bike models that will be produced that year.
Serial numbers are simply a reference, and without the color and decal style in combination with the number, will someone be able to totally ID it. That is why Smoken Endo is asking the other question. You have to look at about 3 factors to ID a frame year/model. I have a few more that I through in the equation too

did Redline ever officially offer a "87" RL20 II ??
if they did, was it 88 style, w/ 990s, and painted rear triangle, or was it like the 86 ??

That is the "iffy" year. However, yes there was 1987.
The common one is the black and chrome version (picture below, disregard my parts, I built it that way). It came sometimes as a painted BB (RL Paulie's) and sometimes without. The pegs are lower and small. Don't get excited if you have one and the pegs are "upper" and small, it is possible too. There are no 990 brake mount. ALL 990 frames are 1988 model, no exceptions.

Brian just brought this latest ID thing to look for.
The 87's have a split in the brake cable guides. Look at a closer picture of my 87. The forks should have this same matching split cable guide too....
The forks on this 87 are not correct. They are actually a MX tapered Redline Fork. That was what I had at the time. I have correct forks for it, but never got around to changing them out...

another point about serial numbers, in general (most companies, really):
the only purpose of a serial number (especially asian/mass produced frames) is to track production in the event of a problem (bad tubing, problem with welding, etc...that is discovered after the fact) and to keep track of where/when they were sold. it's not to identify a model or model year (although it sometimes can do this). for example, an "87" number on an "88" year model is only 'cuz that is when it was made, not because they were using up old numbers. all those asian numbers are stamped sequencially more-or-less as they are being used, not as a large batch ahead of time (which is how some smaller/US companies do it).

I a few of the Redline sprockets you speak of. The ones for the 88's. The ones that were black (not white) were on the later 89/90/91 bikes, an were also generally found on the BMX models.
The correct one, and only one, was the white one....and those are the ones that I have. 44T
