Ok Stephen whats the story about that RL 20 II you have there ?? 2 990 brake mounts

on the rear?

Stephen, I remember that being on ebay last year. I believe it was frontguard that had it in his collection right? The same guy that bought RL's old bike? I thought he was trying to sell 2 prototypes. I don't remember what the other one looked like though.

Prototype frame. They apparently were toying with different designs for the 88 model. I'm glad they didn't go with the RL-20B style real stand.

Yes, this is one of two that Frontgaurd had. I bought one. The other barely had an welded on items. This one had the most and I thought looked the best.
He stills has RL's bike. He offered it back to me for what he paid for it, but that's too much for me now. I think he paid too much in the first place, but it was bid up that high. When you spend that much money on any bike, you almost have to plain to keep it. There are not a lot of people that dump that much into a bike, especially now a days.

So, here’s a build that I actually completed nearly 20 years ago that I’m just getting around to sharing.
The frame is an ’87, but the forks are from ’88. I got the frame and fork during a clearance sale from Frankfort BMX in ’89, then added components as I had the means to do so.
Some notable components:
Front brakes: ACS BOA, complete with the ‘ACS Doubler’
Rear brake: Odyssey Pitbull
Rotor: Original ACS Rotor, salvaged from my ’86 Schwinn Free Form EX
Pedals: Shimano DX
Grips: Jive Handles
Stem: Hutch
Wheels: ACS 48s with ‘CD’ hubs…
Tires: ACS RL Edge
Chainring: Haro Uni-directional
Spider: GT CD-style (there were a lot of ‘CD” themed components in the late ‘80s, weren’t there?)
Still one of my most prized possessions…

GALLERY OF 1985 RL20 I got this bike in 1985 and it had not been ridden since 1993, when I moved from home to go to college. I recently retrieved the bike from my parents attic and I was amazed to fine it in great working condition. The only thing I had to replace was the wheels and the grips. Other than these two items, this bike is totally original down to the turquoise brake cables. Everything on this bike was made in Japan and the wheel bearings are still smoking hot! Before I cleaned it up, I had to take it out to the track and pump it a few times just for old time kicks. What an incredibly smooth ride! Everyone at the track flocked to the old RL20 like moths to light. Some of the new kids had never seen old school chromoly and had to drop down their shades!

Very nice survivor! She's a looker!
Intersting routing of the rear cable.
Just curious, but why would you take a freestyle bike to the track?
Fix the seat alignment and flip the front wheel and it's perfect.
I have a similar future project in the works...

The track isn't a full fledged BMX track. It's just a neighborhood short run track with an old school 1/4 pipe. I just wanted the neighborhood kids to see something that they hadn't seen before. It's a trip when a 37 year old shows up with something from outerspace!
As far as I know that is how the rear cable has always been?!? Thanks for spotting the reversed wheel. I spent hours and hours getting all the break pad wear off those mags! Magic Eraser rocks!

I tried selling my bike on eBay and had little success. Mixed blessing really. I guess I am going to finish what I started and powder coat the pedals for starters. I am also going to give the front pegs a bath in some coca-cola. Any suggestions on removing rust from small parts like pegs, bolts and screws?

That RL is one sick survivor !! As for rust on small parts try soaking them in white vinegar- I actually had great results when I soaked my RL pegs in it---I dont recall how long, I think I soaked mine overnight.

I have always admired this thread and let it inpire me. I'm taking my chance to share my '87 Prostyler now before I have to let it go. .... But "I was there!
Powder Coated Frame Bars and Stem, ACS Z-48's, single pinch 401's, ACS RL Edge tires, have an ACS Pro Rotor to go on, etc. etc. Trying for an Osborne Clone.
But I hurt quicker and heal slower. Time to replace some less loved but more needed parts of my life.

I been watching this thread for a while, waiting for the day that my RL 20 II would be done so I could join the club. But with things the way they are, I guess I'll have to stay a spectator as I had to put her up for sale last week. Now when I catch myself looking at it in the living room, all I can think is that in a few days I'll have to pack it up and send it off, bummer.
