Full Version: WHAT ARE THE BEST FREESTYLE TYRES
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Freestyle BMX
Morrissey
From back in the day that are still available at a realistic price?

Ive narrowed it down to 3, the tioga comp ST, tioga comp pool tyre, or the panaracer freestyle tyres.

I do like the hutch freestyle tyres but am not made of money so they are out of the question and also the peregrine 48s but the 48s are not really period correct for my build and seem hard to find in black anyway.

Please give me your thoughts on this so i can make up my mind, are there any i have missed.

I wore out a set of odyssey barefeet in one day once.

I was learning frontyards and wore through to the threads.

The best tires are ACS RL Edge tires. but they are not available today.

Chase made his tires to mirror the qualities of the RL edge tires. I haven't used them but I hear good things.
Morrissey
ahh havent considered those, anyone got any pics or links to any that are available?

thanks guys

gt logo tread freestyle tires are also pretty good, they arnt the cheapest but they arnt all that expensive compared to the more rare freestyle tires.

heres some pics of the odyssey frequency-g tires

i have a pair in 1.75 and their the smoothest rolling tires ive ever ridden. they have amazing grip and are great for scuffing. you can pick em up for $15 apeice and you can get them on any bmx mail order.

heres some links to some good mailorders.

since the tire is still in production their REAL easy to get ahold of.

blackwall tyres are cool for a new school ride, for "vintage" you need gum/skinwall

comp st, comp ramp, panaracer, IRC, peregrine

I have the new Chase tires and love them on my FBM Equilibrium. KHE also makes a cool skin wall tire called the Lamello that I have on my trickstar and they give it the old school look with a new school tire. Check out flatlandfuel.com for those.

keep on riding.
oldschoolrider88
OR you can find some 1.75 Primo V Monster's with a skinwall like i have.
jamie wright
oh yeah, I second that about the bare feet tires. They don't last. Back in 87 we used to get them free for our bikeshop team and I'd wear the front tire down in two days of good riding.
oldschoolrider88
BOOM....here you go.
flatlandfuel has them
tony91
i myself am not to into gumwalls, i guess its one of those things that i wouldve had to be in the 80's to apriceate. i think when i get new tires again ill get some v-monsters or lamellos, maybe the gumwall will grow on me.

ACS RL EDGE

aren't the new acs true 100 tires basically just a updated version of the rl edge tires?
2FRESH
The 1.75 Primo V-Monster's are great, but they wear out looking square profile and they don't make the 1.75 skinwall anymore, just dull black. Same with the Chase tires, why do they have all to be all-black? I know i know.. "enough of rotten gum and skinwalls" ..yeah but in my opinion atleast there should an option for those hatin the all black trend.

Panaracers are great, come in few colors and have skinwall. But they wear out fast if you actually ride them. Plenty on Haro tires still around in many colors too, not as fast wearing. Some Peregrine HPs available from germany.
RL Edge's were the best like Glenn said there.

Why not try some Kenda's? There are decent 1.75 Kenda "RL Egde", "V-Monster", "Panaracer" -imitations out there. They're not brand name vintage and not the same quality as the originals were but definitely work great on a rider bike and have the right looks for that older build. Plus they hold up some good 80-90 PSI pressure without problems.
Morrissey
Thanks for all the input guys, i have a few more choices now, its gonna be a show bike only not a rider and they need to be 84 or 85 era.

I really like the tioga pool tyres with no tread pattern, they look quite different and you dont see many around on builds these days but am not too sure on the era.

Thanks again guys Adam

thanks morrissey...im in the usa..am i gonna have to pay a boatlod to get them sent to me over the pond?? lol
matt1
also ,what would be the correct tire for the year of the bike...the white panaracers,or the white haro freestyle tire?? the bike is a 83 haro freestyler
Morrissey
dont think the haro freestyle tyre was out in 83 from memory only, so could be wrong, i had a first gen haro as they are now known in 83 and cant seem to remember haro tyres being out then.

i think i ran comp 3s as tyres werent such a big issue back then as they are now lol and also mike d ran them

email him about shipping but if its over the top i can put you in touch with another good guy over here that might help you out a bit cheaper on the panaracers
Spicoli
period correct on a 83 Haro, I'm thinkin Comp 3s,, or Comp Staduim tires...I seem to remember thats what everyone was running back then...I dont think there were any designated freestyle tires in 83.

Sorry to backtrack, but the RL Edges? Didn't they explode?
I think it was a pic of Craig Campbell I saw once, his tyre held on with gaffer tape. The beading ripped off too easily, they were bordering dangerous.
Peregrine HPs, however... now they were tyres.
FreeEnterprise
Any tire pumped up to 110 psi has the possibility to explode, especially on cheap rims.

I never had one explode on me. But, I was always carefull when I mounted them. I would pump them up to about 30 psI and check to see if they had any bumps in them before I would pump them up all the way...

If the tire bead seats correctly they should be fine.

They used to get pinholes in the sidewalls, especially if you did grinds. Then the tube would start sticking out. and that would usually pop after a few days.

This is why you don't see many skinwall tires anymore.

87HAROMASTER
ha yea..i loved the rl edge tires back then, they wrere great from roliing and scuffing..but they kept blowin up on me....i run the chase freq g tires in 1.75 now..the closest to the rl edge...i hear hes working on a skinwall version...

every now and then u can find the rl tires on e-bay...but they ususally go for aboput 50 or more a pair depending...

somone asked b4 about the acs true tires being an updated version of the rl tires, which was true, no pun inteneded..lol...but they werent quite the same.
