Just got back into BMX racing this year after a 19 year layoff. Never was much into the freestyle thing but I remember growing up in the 80's I always thought Masters were the coolest and always wanted to add one to my bike fleet, but could never rationalize the need to spend money on something I couldn't race......
Anyway, a good friend of mine hooked me up with this Master recently.
I started working on the chrome on the rear triangle and it looks like it should clean up pretty good. The paint, decals, and a lot of the parts are trashed though.
I'm thinking about restoring it to be a rider. I'd like to change the color to black (black front triangle, black forks, and black bars/post). With some black tuffs or black ACS Z-Mags. And go with the decals for the black bikes from that period (88 or 89? I can't tell the year of this bike but that is my best guess). Would that be sacrelidge? Should I do it in the original blue/black color scheme?
It's missing the front brake also. When I put it back together, what brake should I use? I don't care if the parts are OEM spec, but I'd like them to be sorta period-correct....
Oh, and it is also missing the front fork fold down stands. Anyone have a lead on a set of them? I want to ditch those gawd-awful pegs that are on the axles.
Thanks!

thats a 1988, nice score. if you want to get it done up in black I dont see anything wrong with that, the blue 88 masters are the ones that turn up the most. if you want a front brake with awesome braking power, try a diacompe bulldog. their still widely available and are
cheap to buy and work great. the pegs that you currently have on there are haro pegs, if you dont want the haro pegs, I wouldnt mind having them.

Ha yeah i hear ya there - those axel pegs are hard to come by. looks like a nice score. did you pay much for it? as for the fork flip ups they are easy to come by.

Thanks for the responses!
OK, 88 it is then. I think I will do the black, I like the blue but you are right, I always seem to see the blue ones. Black would be different. There is a shot of a black one with white tires and seat in the Rockford pics that looks great.
On the pegs, I didn't know they were Haro pegs. They look rather shatty and are pretty beat up. If I decide to get rid of them I'll let you know. If they are Haro pegs maybe I will keep them on there, but they just seem kind of redundant with the stands that are already in the rear of the frame and the fold-downs on the fork (If I find a set of those, I'll check out the 'Bay if they are easy to come by......).
I really didn't pay anything for it. He got it for free, and then gave it to me for helping him out with a project he was working on. So total $$ invested at this point is $0! I wish I could say the same for the other 15 bikes or so that are residing at the house..... (Road bikes, mountain bikes, and BMX bikes)

Free? Definitely a nice score.
Some tricks are easier with pegs because you can stand on them when the bike is different angles. The framestaders are most useable when the bike is level. I like having both back there.
As for the forkstanders: I like them, but tricks are easier on the axle pegs because they are closest to the point of balance. But if you can do the same tricks on the fork pegs then I think it's a tribute to the old school. Watch the video clip of Wulfran busting tricks on the forks. Hot.
I want see your results if paint/powder your court black. My buddy and I are thinking of changing our 87s to the black 88 scheme. The ones i've seen thus far are nice.

Yeah, free is good! Though "free" could turn into "money pit" if I don't keep myself in check. LOL.
This is the black Master that made me want to do this one in black.
Except my fork would be black and it would have black tuffs or z-mags on it. I don't know if I would do the white accents on the seat, tires, and grips...

Nope, didn't go to Rockford. Had thoughts about it but in the end I just didn't commit to the idea. I think I will probably go next year though............

I'm resurrecting this old thread.
I've decided that I will probably never restore the Master, I've got too much going on with Racing and other things in life. Its still sitting in my garage in the same state it is in the photos above.
If anyone is interested in it, shoot me a PM and we can talk. If no one is interested I'll put it up on the 'Bay in a couple weeks. Thanks for all of the help, and sorry I didn't get a chance to work on the project.

got the bike last night! looks GREAT. I mean its beat and all, but the dropouts look near mint. gonna need to pick up some oxalic acid and it should be a nice survivor. also, what are those wheels? they look like RL edge but dont say that, they say "weinmann" and "hard annodized" and are single wall. also, what are the pegs? they dont say haro anywhere on them. btw there are joytech hubs. tifo, cant say thanks enough. best of luck to your friend man! also, is the fluted lay back seatpost stock anyone?

Hey Andrew, the fluted post came stock on Haros. Weinmann was the manufacturer of the RL Edge wheels so they might just be missing the RL Edge decal. They also sold virtually the same wheels without the RL Edge decals later on.

RL Edge rims were made by Weinmann.
Seatpost and clamp look stock.
