i've finally finished my pft, almost everything on it is used. i've refinished everything myself. the only thing nos on this whole bike is the grips, brake cables, axle pegs, tires, and chain. those parts were nos because i couldnt refinish those pieces.

That looks great! Congrats!
Give us a parts rundown.
I'm not a fan of polishing power series cranks, but it looks like you did a good job on them. Are those superlace wheels? I think I might have a white 87 GT seat for you. If you're interested I'll try to dig it up.
Haro#7
Ricky D that is just AWESOME !!! Probably the sweetest GT build I have seen and you restored everything yourself. That makes it that much more satisfying. Great job ! Did you have the cranks chromed or just a great polish job ?

Spicoli
really nice bike, you did a great job on your resto... I got a thing for white bikes too...yesteday Paulies Dyno, today your GT...its been a good weekend

any more pics ? maybe some b4 pics....
Spicoli
oops, you were postin a b4 pic while I was writing...cool
Haro#7
I agree with Spicoli about white bikes, theres something about them that makes them look so good. Its so bad that the last bike I sent Chip almost freaked him out when I said I didnt want it white. HA HA HA

i need to thank all the people who helped with the parts unfortunately i dont know everyones ebay names. i did get the powerdisc from jainbaby. and os-bob-o hooked me up with the headset,1 set of nos tube rides, neck ad-990, the levers, gyro. and the seat. so i guess mainly im thanking bob-o, jainbaby, and ebay. oh yeah and AJK for the excellent repro stickers
mnewxcv
how did u polish all the parts? and what did u use to take off the powder/paint on parts?
eliu eric
is that a 1988 frame?
RL20-II Dreamin'
Awesome job. If I had a "second holy grail", the PFT is it.
Ricky D
the parts were stripped with an air tool with a tip mainly used by mechanics to strip head gasket residue from heads. its like a real hard scotchbrite pad. the parts were then polished on a 6inch bench grinder with buffing pads on them. 2 types of compound were used on the wheels, 1 a rougher compound that would take out scratches and oxidation the other was a jewlers rouge to bring out the shine. my first job when i was a kid was at a lighting company polishing antique lights made of brass, that skill came in handy. eliu it started life as an 88 pro freestyle tour but actually had a 11 of 87 manufacturing date..and i had the 87 pft back in the day. since the 2 years were identical f/f sets i stickered it as the one i liked better the 87
mnewxcv
hey you dont happen to take requests for polishing for a fee do you?

PS thats a sweet job you did. are those AJK repop decals? if so how are they?
Ricky D
i could possibly polish parts for people however i might have to do it for parts because a fee would be to high. it takes a long time to do the parts to get them to shine that much. the cranks took about 5 hours start to finish. i wouldnt of paid someone to do it because it would have cost me more to polish than i paid for the cranks but if your interested message me. by the way i picked up the cranks off someone who one them on ebay. he won that skyway ta a few weeks back. i emailed him and asked if he would sell the cranks to me since they were the wrong era for the ta. he sold them to me for $100 with the sealed bottom bracket. yes they are ajk decals and they are as good as the originals. laser cut even with the hole in the downtube for the brake cable. i had them the same week i purchased them. i am extremely happy with the whole ajk experiance and i reccommend him to everyone
mnewxcv
ah, I have a dremel tool and I THINK i have a pollishing bit for it...maybe ill try it myself. got a couple rims, seat clamps, and cranks to do. the rims I might just do with high grit sand paper since they are so big.

I have NOS 87 pft decals just the down tube though. maybe I will sell them if AJKs are so good.
Ricky D
the stickers are definately worth it, the dremmel tool will work on tight spots but on longer pieces it will take forever + you have the chance of making the part look wavy because it spins so fast it will take off more material so make sure you keep the bit moving and dont hold it in one spot
eliu eric
got to agree ajk decals are awsome got some for my pft also and they are great on mine

very happy just wish they had some regular perfomer sets i would be there in a second again
Mike-G
Ricky D, sweet build! looks great! do you have some close up pics of your bike?

Yeah, AJK decals are very good...have them on both my GT's.
Ricky D
heres a few and this is my 200th post
Ricky D
here's some more
Mike-G
nice! nice touch with the chain ring bolts...as well, the 'vintageBMX.com' on the gyro is cool.
mnewxcv
thats real nice man. If you want a white izumi chain let me know though, its used in real good shape, $15 plus S&H.

Corrected further down...I'm a tool and need to look better before I type-lol
Nice bike.

I'm someday going to do the 88 PFT I have.

no those are 88 stickers not 89 it also had a 11/87 build date check the 88 and 89 gt catalogs out at ajk
MiniZ
Awesome! Your attention to detail and skill in refinishing/refurbishing really show on this bike.
Smokin Endo
Sweet work Ricky ! Nice job

not to bring the great work done down in any way

but i though the team models had the brake adjustment on the down tube right before going through the frame

1987 catalog gt pro freestyle tour team model page 3

but i can see why gt might of put 88 decals on the frame might of pushed it out too late for 87 just a wild guess
Blue_Max
that looks awesome
HOT DOG
Hey Brother it turned out great! The best part is that anyone on the form will be able to see and touch it in person if you go to Rockford!

Eliu - What you see in the 87 catalog was left off the production models. Wouldn't mind find a prototype frame tho....hmmmm.
bwl007
That's an exceptional build. Very, very nice!

Good times, I love all white 'euro' bikes. I bet you wish you had this little one to keep your's company:

Ok, for the record I was wrong- and funny enough I realized it while driving home last night, ten minutes after I posted they were 89 decals-hahahaha. I looked quick before leaving work and wasn't thinking.

Regardless, like I said it's a sweet ride for sure.

I feel like a noobie...

Jamison
Ricky D
that brake adjuster kinked the brake line too much, thats why they left it off the production bikes. if you look further in the catalog at the frame and fork sets, they already stopped putting them on. and like i said it started as an 88 but since i had the 87 bitd, thats how i built it. at the time i bought the bike , no 87's were coming up, since i bought this one i've seen about 5 87's come up. technically it was still built in 87(barely) but like everyone here says " build it how you want it" and thats how i wanted it
SuperK
great job- sick bike!!!
Hudson
Who all bought Yasser's 88 decals and is now building either a chrome or white 88? Raise your hand...
86EndoKing
Sweet Ride. Restoring those parts to new is a way better feeling then buying NOS.

Cool bike, hope to see it @ RKFD.

Guilty as charged, Keith. I've got an original white one that's pretty well beat up. Those fresh sticky things are just what the Dr. order.

Thanks Yasser!
Hudson
Word...i've got a blue 88 that i think i will transform to a white...
Jay Huber
Beautiful job on your grail. I just aquired a white 87, identical, minus the 3pc, not sure what color I want if I decide to restore it, of course not sure if the forks are correct. I might just make it a rider. It's so sweet, I don't have the patience to wait for the restore to be done, I want to ride it now.
Ricky D
i say ride it this summer, when winter comes around do a restore.
92gli
very sweet.

You could make those cranks look very close to the original brushed finish by wet sanding them with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper and wd-40. It will knock the polish off them and the paper is fine enough that it won't leave any sanding lines.
