Is this an 87 or 88?

It has araya rims with joytech hubs. Are those original to the sport?
I don't usually look at any of the "H" brands but this opportunity presented itself to me for a decent price.

I think thats a 87, since ive heard the 87s came with chrome forks. as for the original wheels, i dont think those are the original. maybe some of the other members can tell you what wheels were original?
Wheelie Nelson
Looks like an '87 to me and I don't think it ever came with those wheels.
I'm no expert though.
Let me have those forks?
Blue_Max
I could be mixing up my haro models here, but I think some of the 87/88 models came with skyway oe's. oh and if you happen to sell wheelie the forks, id be interested in buying the rest of the bike. sorry for saying that lol..I just want one last haro pretty badly.

Pretty sure that's an 87. Skyway OE's were an option for the FST's and FSX's. Those Araya's were options on the Sports and Masters.
Blue_Max
I knew I mixed something up on the models there, thanks for clearing that up ndprts4haro. I got the fst's and fsx's mixed up with the sports wheels wise.

It's not mine yet... still debating if I should front the dough. If those rims are original then this thing looks to be all original except for the tires right?
Blue_Max
if you dont really want it, id be glad to send you the dough plus shipping to pay for it. yeah it does look all original except the gt tires and the black power disc thats under the chainring. on my sport the rims are pretty similar to that, and the power disc under the chainring is silver.

Hudson
nice survivor...how much is the dood askin for it?
Pauly
$200... I'll probably pick it up to maintain my relationship with him. He's a bike hoarder. His backyard is full of bikes covered with blue tarps. He tells me about BMX bikes that he's come across. I have no idea where he gets his stuff and he won't tell me. He might frequent police auctions or something. Blue-Max, I won't be getting rid of it any time soon, but eventually I will. I'll try to keep you posted.
Blue_Max
thats a sweet deal for sure that you got there. are you going to ride it at all? the place you got it from sounds like you could get some decent scores there at times, theres actually a guy who lives in a house around here that has a front yard just literally piled with 100s of bikes and parts, ive never really checked it out though to see if theres anything decent or for sale. thanks for letting me know rl paulie, im willing to wait quite a while until you decide to unload the sport. in the meantime, enjoy the bike because its a sweet score and definately a bike that rides smooth.
hutchhound
It tells the year in the serial number.
crowdaddy
I think thos wheels are original. You could get either or in 87. I think the SN will tell you the year. I wish I would have kept the 88.5 I sold to a member last year. They are awsome ramp bikes.

Hudson
Wurd...at 2 hundo tahts a no brainer. What shape is the notorious 'smoke chrome' on the cranks in?
Ricky D
that seems to be an all origfinal 87 except for the tires, nice find. those are the correct rims that came on them. one of my buddys just picked up a survivor 87 sport and it had the same wheels. i think it was to save money by not puting peregrine wheels on it anymore
mr coasterbrake
according to my '88 catalog, those wheels are stock. i'm pretty sure the '87s and '88s were the same spec and you could get the blue/black both years.

serial number will tell you what year it was built, but production runs about 6 months ahead of real-time, so...

a 1987 model could have either "86" or "87" in the serial,
a 1988 model could have "87" or "88" - depending on when the welding took place.
pjbaz
87 with a chrome fork...88 or 88.5 (although the brakes were no longer 990 on the 1/2 year model) with black forks.

I have an 87 with 88.5 forks on it in that color shceme, but I don't think it looks that nice, and mine has Peregrine 48's as the rear mag was toasted.

Snag it for 2 bills.
mr coasterbrake
all the '88s i had/have (masters and sports) still had chrome forks.

i know the whole deal with the 88.5s was last minute supply issue (running out too early in the season). perhaps the painted forks came a bit sooner that the complete bikes.
Spicoli
Looks like a sweet bike, you should definetly snag it for 200...
PJandHAROs
that's the 88 blue/black color scheme the 87 one had flourescent yellow lettering and the stripes were black to silver. 88's were available with chrome forks as well as painted forks
pjbaz
I stand corrected, in my limited Haro experience I had only seen 87's with chrome forks, although I stand behind the "snag it for 2 bills" comment for sure-LOL.

This bike turned out to be quite the little gem. I can't believe that I almost didn't pick it up. Other than a tiny bit of surface rust on the rear platform and dry rotted tires, this thing is almost perfect. It's going to clean up sooo nice. I would say this frame and fork are in better condition than things I've seen listed as NOS with shelf wear. It's that nice. Looks like it's been ridden twice then put in to dry storage.

Hudson
Blue labeled dominator...haro exlcusive shizz there. Nice job dewd. SCORE.
Smokin Endo
Sweet ! Even has the fake A'me's they came with stock ! Sweet pull Bro !

Sweet Sport Paulie.
Blue_Max
thats a sweet score you got for sure on the sport
FreeEnterprise
One of the kids in my neighborhood had that same bike. Just like that. His name was Ola Peterson.

I ran into him about 6 years ago and he was stationed in Virginia in the military. He told me he still had his bike but it was in storage...

I wonder if that is his old bike... He never rode it much, but he did wear out the stock tires and put on blue gt's back then...

weird.

Those stems suck, his bars were always moving.
Pauly
Did he buy the bike in VA?
It has a Virginia bike shop decal on the seat tube.

Anyone got any blue Haro skinwalls for me??
Pauly
Thanks Brian, I was wondering if the fake A'MEs were original. I noticed the lettering on the seat after Hudson mentioned it. Cool.
Pauly
All cleaned up and ready to roll. The ONLY thing I replaced was the tires. Everything else (as far as I can tell) is all original, right down to the brake pads and the 1987 dated cables.

Just like the day it left the factory (sans tires). Great score!
RIDE A BIKE
NOS two the max! The tires cool as hell!!

Awesome!!! I rode that bike forever. Well, not that one, but I had a turquoise 87 team Sport that I cracked and the guys at the bike shop (actually it was RIDE A BIKE ^, he worked there) replaced the frame with that one for me. I still have it but I cracked this one also (stupid me trying to learn hang 5's!!! I did learn them though finally). Mine's a little more used, but that's awesome!!! It would cost well over 200 for me to build up mine again if I were to go buy all the parts. I really still have most of the parts from it on my Master rider that I built up after this one cracked, but if I had to go buy them, you know what I mean. Great score I say.

Paul,

That thing is gorgeous! Well worth the asking price.

BOB-O
nice grab for sure......the tioga tires look sweet on there.
Pauly
Thanks for the comments! I really love the way this thing turned out. If you haven't tried using oxalic acid to remove rust from chrome, you don't know what you're missing. The chrome gleams now.
Unfortunately, I'm probably going to end up selling this bike. I just don't have any room for it. My garage is so jammed full of bikes and parts that I can barely get around. The cash would come in handy too. I'll hold on to it a little while longer before making a final decision.

WOW! Great score Paulie!!! I figured it was probably in nice shape from the first close-up pics u posted of the wheels, the spokes/nipples look perfect! But I had no idea that it was THIS nice!!! What a find, and a great price too! It's rare to find bikes in original shape, let alone in that condition! How long did it take? About an hour to clean it and throw the tires on?! lol. Awesome score!
Pauly
Nope, I spent several hours on this bike. Disassembled and polished everything including the brake arms, levers and pedals, regreased all the bearings, etc.... probably spent an hour with westleys bleche-white and a cloth just getting those grips clean. 12 hour soak of the chome in the acid.
Jeff S
Paulie,

Nice one! You should try that as your rider. Brian P and I both love ours. Really solid all around bikes.
