I was taking pictures of this F&F to post on Ebay when I realized that there's a name slightly engraved on the downtube of the frame. It also appears that there is a phone number.
It's an 1988 Dyno Detour F&F in blue.
Here are the markings.....
"Pat Finnell" (lightly engraved on the underside of the downtube)
"XXXXXXXX" (engraved on the bottom of the BB shell - sure doesn't look like a phone number)
"KS88067282" - a label applied to the bottom of the BB shell.
Before I list it - I thought it would make sense to at least post it here in hopes of possibly uniting a rider with his steed. Maybe luck can re-unite them.
I'm sure that some of you (including myself) would love to be able to have your ACTUAL bike that your rode as a kid back and it's inlikely, if not impossible that it could happen. I'm fortunate enough to still own my bike - but I realize that I'm very lucky in that regard.
If anyone may have ANY info that could help me out - please PM me.
Thank You,
Mike

That one number is a SS# - especially with the spacing in it.
I am limited to what my company allows me to do, but here is some info on the SS#
It was issued in 1981 in the state of California, and the person is not dead
Here are some possible address, not having anything to do with the SS#:

I have no idea why someone would inscribe their SS# on the bottom of a bike frame but I hadn't considered that number as such.
I've removed the number from my post - since that may be the case. Just to be safe.
I was really hoping that the original owner might be on this site. I know it's a longshot - but it would be cool to re-unite him (or her) to this frame if possible.
Thanks for the information Stephen! Hopefully, someone will see this and recognize the name.
Mike
PS - I also edited the picture so the number on the BB shell is no longer visable.

It's a very long shot to be someone on this board. Generally speaking too, most people could careless if you had their old bike. To some, it was just their "kid bicycle".
Even though that SS# is from California, does not mean that those address are not one of them.
He could have moved.
You can make some fast phone calls to each - see if you get a hit.

Hey....just noticed on the BB tube....that 0978 - I bet any money that is his birthday.
I know that the SS# says from 1981, but that can happen in many cases - sometimes that date gets some years added to it. I don't believe my SS# is correctly dated too.

I did a fast "date of birth" search, and it appears that out of all list, they are 44 and up in age.
The search that I did is not real reliable, so those names could still be the one.

Stephen,
Thanks for all the investigative work. I'll try some of these people this week. It's a long shot - but who knows maybe he would be jazzed about gettting the frame back.
He could also tell me to get the &^% off his phone line too.

Same here - I am getting back my 85 white RL-20II that appeared on ebay. It is a true 1985 model too.

Not sure in your country, but it is not too hard. I went to school, but really, if you get a foot in the door otherwise, it is something that truly gets learned as you do it. A school can show you fundamentals, but the true "work" shows all.
Do an internet search for schools in your area. Inquire there - ask where all the agencies are located - what’s the hiring rate right now, etc....

Yes, that is correct. There were 9 numbers but I only put 8 X's in there when I erased the number.
First two people on the list - NOT receptive to my phone calls! HA.

Engraving names and identification numbers on valuables was part of a SouthWest program called "Operation Identification", that started in the late 70's. The local Police Department would Issue, sell and/or loan you an engraver and you would tag all the valuables in the house so that if it was stolen, and then later come up in a bust of some sort, you could get your valuables back. the only reason i know this is because my parents bought a house from someone who was obsessed with the program, they tagged everything. They tagged the water heater even.

Mike,
It would be cool if the original owner received his old scoot. Good luck.
Ya ready for the Rockford ride?

James,
If if the person went to the trouble of engraving their name - they would probably be the type of person who would think it was cool to get it back.
I just feel it would be sensless to NOT at least try to find the original owner. I mean - his name is on the bike. It can't be THAT hard.
So, far no takers on the F&F - more people contacted without luck.
I am DEFINATELY ready for Rockford - just bringing a rider though - no contest bikes.

OK then, who has MY frame? (85 green Haro Master, had either a Duker or a BFD decal on the left side of the downtube by the head tube...please...)
I would be stoked to no end if someone had my frame and fork, your doing the right thing by trying to find him.

I just got my Hutch Judge frame/fork back in my hands.I tell ya,its a good feeling to have your bike that you had as a kid back in your posession.I,like an idiot sold it about three to four years ago,not thinking that I would be restoring bmx bikes.I seen it on Ebay, and I knew it was mine, its in the same condition that I sold it in

Fortunately I had the foresight to hold on to the stuff that meant something to me. I've still got my '82 Predator in the same condition it was in when I was 16. I've also got a looptail PK frame that I kept because I knew it was historically significant. I kept a Champion cruiser that I didn't have much of an attachmant to, but now that I've found this community of folks who would appreciate it, I may let it go. The cruiser never felt right to me. Guess I'm a 20" kinda guy.
I did toss a lot of stuff, but I'm glad I held on to what I did.

Also, his parents may have made him do all that scription on it, since they bought it for "big bucks" for a "brand name bike"....

Update - I've tried all the people that Stephen listed and even a few more.
Most people thought I was a tele-marketer and wanted me off the phone. Many asked if it was a motorcycle frame or a bicycle frame.
At any rate - it's hittin' Ebay tonight. I tried.

OK - I know it's not the same name - but this is very eerily similar. I found this news in the Cafe section. Could the engraving on the frame be off slightly - maybe I got the name wrong?

100 bucks says that engraving was done when the bike was Brand New in 88 or so.
