Sandy:
Scott Freeman knows Paul Harrison and Brian Benson and I think he knows 'sparky' Mark Bell as well. Matt Bennett was another guy from Atlanta that I met after the freestyle days. Maybe he checks in here as well. I worked with and dated his sister Robin Bennett for a little while in the mid 90's. Now, if we can only find Geoff Heath, Vincent Edwards, and your other dudes from the Conyers team. What about the other old Free Flight guys too?

Thanks for posting that site, I never knew about it.
I posted this thread about a half year ago. Scott chimmed in a gave an update on some fellas. I thought I would post this again to see if any new people had joined in these raindeer games.
Geoff Heath, I last heard from him around 2000 in a random email he sent me. I responded but never heard back. Vincent Edwards either moved or dropped out of high school after the 11th grade, after that year I never saw him again.

I'm from Savannah, then I lived in Athens for school and later ATL. I started riding in 1988, but didn't know too many people who rode in Savannah except for the local kids. I rode with Eric Gustaphason and Joe Fedo sometimes when they lived in Savannah. There was this guy named Raymond Martin who lived in Savannah who was a great rider on flat and ramps. I have no idea where he's gone off to, though.
I graduated from hs in '94, so I think I'm a bit younger than everybody here.
Bell has said he was going to start riding again every year since about 1994. He ruled back in the day, though. In the mid/late 90's he would show up every six months or so at the skatepark and bang out every one of his tricks in the first five or ten minutes. He was a good skater, too.
Jamie, I think that was you I met bitd in the Tate Center parking lot. You rolled up on a mountain bike and started doing squeakers on it. I was suprised. I was waiting for Kent Pearson to show up at the time.

D, very cool. I think I remember that somehow! It must have been me because I indeed was riding my mtb in Athens about that time. i'm in Athens as I type this for Alumni weekend for Landscape Architecture. I just found out that there will be a freestyle contest here during the twilight criterium at the end of April. I think Kent is doing this event or is a prime mover in the thing. I'm planning on attending, if only as an observer. I'm bringing my FBM.

I rode around Lilburn and Lawrenceville mostly, from around 84 - 92 or so. Britt's Bikes was the local bike store and I ended up working there (child labor!) doing new bike builds, a bit of service, and even a bit of lacing in exchange for parts.

Fo sho! I stopped by the local bike shop up here in Braselton and picked my up a springer gel mountain bike seat. Not really vintage or BMX, but much more forgiving than the old plastic seats would be on my old school ***. I also picked up a braced layback post off of ebay.
I need to go through and regrease all the bearings and true up the wheels, and then I'm g2g.
Me? I'm Darren Hough. I moved to Philadelphia in 2004. Before I left Georgia, I rode with Kent P., Jody Temple, Gregg Overstreet, Josh Pontzer, Dowker and the rest of the Athens Family pretty regularly. I went to school in Athens and then worked for six years in Atlanta, I saw those guys a good bit of the time. I rode some with them back in July the last time I visited home.

I don't know the rest of the Athens Family, but Dowker was always a riot. I could tell you some stories. I rode with him from the time was about 15 years old to about 23 years old or so. Good guy and will always be considered a local here in Peterborough.

dont think so, but I had too much fun down there and that was soooo long ago. people would look at me weird riding my trick star to class doing rolling tricks and grip rides along the way.
No, I'm the oldest in my family. Just one brother, he went to UGA right after I did. For several years in the early 90's, I was pretty much the only rider in Savannah.

dont forget Jamie West, he was the top AFA 14-15x flatlander in 1989 and probably top 14x guy in 1988. he is now the head golf pro at The Club at Savannah Harbor. he was really good.
Yeah, Jamie was a great rider. He's still good today, too. He lived wayyyyy on the other side of town from me though, and by the time I was old enough know what I was doing with riding (14 or so), he'd pretty much already moved on to other things. I haven't talked to him in a while, but we still try to get together when I'm home for x-mas or whenever. I actually never met him until about 2001! His riding comeback was part of the reason the Athens guys started the Final Exam Jam in 2001, which was become one of the biggest and most important flatland draws on the east coast for the past five years.

Allen, it's Jamie here.. I rode with you guys several times back when... I have been riding flatland again for about three years now. In fact, i was just in Athens over the weekend and rode a bit with some of the current Athens riders. remember Mark Bell? He's in Athens still as well and owns a couple of bars, but doesn't ride. I was on the Dixon's team with him back in 87-ish. I haven't heard any current info on the other guys above except for Brian Benson, who I think is still running an adventure trip company in Costa Rica.

I'm not FROM Georgia...but this thread reminds me of when I got back into BMX in the early 90s. I was a student at Georgia Southern at the time, around '92/93 and I'd bought a new ELF and brought it with me to school. So if any of you happened to go to GSU and saw a guy riding a chrome ELF around campus, that was me.

Have ton of memories from these day's. HEy Woody I always heard that Joel Lamonthe taught you the peddal picker is this true?
freestyl
Feb 16 2008, 03:05 PM
Not as far as I can remember, but I do remember he was a really good rider. From what I can remember I started doing pedal pickers within about a week or two after learning cherry pickers. Martin made up the cherry picker and I was the only person that had seen him do it and I learned it right away and did it at the Venice Beach contest. Martin didn't compete there so I didn't think there was any big deal about me doing it. Right after that I just figured I would do them on the pedals that way Martin and I wouldn't be doing the same tricks in a show together. So that would be a good time frame to mark when I started doing them on the pedals. I also heard years later the name Bruce King came up when people talked about doing pedal pickers early on as well. It's highly possible that we were all doing them around the same time, but since I was on the west coast, I got credit for it. This issue regarding quite a few tricks over the past few decades has come up time and time again, old school and new school. I've always referred to it as parallel evolution so to speak. There were lots of talented riders all across the country, just like today, so it's kind of tough to really say who did what first on some tricks. Anyhow, if you see him, tell him I said hello.

Allen,
David, James and Mike were you guys the Georgia style trick team? I remember you guys but unfortunatly didnt ride with you too much. I think we may have all been to competitive at the time. Do you guys have any pictures from the GFA contest? I ran them so didnt have time to take pictures. I remember the Hutch show at Free Flite and Joel showing Woody the trick I also remember Woody picking it up on the first or second try. Woody you are a class act and your control was unbeleivable for the time period, you deserved all the credit you recieved. I like the parallel evolution theory well worded.

I had no idea the guy who owned those bars was part of Team Anonymous! I was at Halo just, well, Saturday. I met all you guys when I was really young, like 14, at a NBL contest in 1991. I used to see Brian at the skatepark as late as 1999, right before he moved to Costa Rica more or less permanently. Lynch was there, too. I also ran into Jimmy at the airport in ATL last Christmas, funny he recognized me but it took me a second to place him, it had been so long since I had seen him. Eric G. was at SCAD in Savannah when I was in hs there, we rode some back then, glad to hear he's doing well with his career. I was a good 4-8 years younger than everyone but I it was always cool hanging out at contests and such.
