I liked his style i think when they built the second camarillo ramp(i forget what video it was), he was killing it.He did awesome alley opp airs on a half pipe.

Based upon how much the sand is tore up under the bike I am going to guess he was "posed" for this picture, but I am not saying that Josh White is, or was a "Poseur".
Anyone else remember when BMX (Action, or Plus) built an all white GT Performer project and had Josh test it?

He was around just a few years ago, even got in a magazine dirt jumping. He was a great guy. Came out of nowhere and dominated the world for awhile. I seen him at the first 2-hip event here in Minnesota. Just skying the halfpipe. I'll try and get some pics. Anybody else have any of Josh

Saw him when he did the Brittannia World Tour thing BITD. After that, Josh "Big Air" White was gone. As if erased from time some might say. But here's to you Docteur Air where ever you are.

Very creative doing flatland as well. Used no pegs.
He did a lot of videos back then.

Cool pic! Sort of like the one in Plus! where Scura surfs on an all white Pro Perfomer.
Drugs?! The rumors around VBMX have been that he was into bodybuilding and invented something that made him so much money he could live off of it. I'd rather believe those rumors...

Hello,
I am Josh Whites brother and think its great his legacy is still going! Josh currently lives in Portland Oregon is married and owns a house there. He is pretty well out of the freestyle scene but absolutly did not get into drugs or anything like that just moved on to other lines of work. I have a bunch of pics I will post later of before he was ever picked by Dyno in 85' and a bunch of rare ones of him on tour with Eddie Fiola.

First two pics of Josh's first contest in Venice Beach 1985. He was a privateer but was picked up by Dyno with a second place finish to Todd Anderson. He broke Dyno frames very easy so they swiched him to GT as the Performer frames were alot stronger
This is an ultra rare vintage photo of Josh on our first 6 foot quarter pipe( about 1984)

I think he is riding a Torker but could be Haro

Hi Custom Cruiser!! Thanks for sharing those awesome images. Everybody here would love to see more, that's for sure.
Question?... Does josh or yourself own any oldschool bikes for the occasional burn down the street?
Is freestyle still in Josh's blood?
Tell us more about your connection to the sport!
Thanks, Robert.

Josh still has a bike but I don't think it gets alot of use. I used to have a small Trick team and we were CO-GT (just free frames, leathers, stickers, ect.)
Here is a pic of of me at a local fair
Here is a pic of me when Josh was doing a BMX plus photo shoot at the Camirillo Ramp. I jumped on the test bike and busted out for Todd Anderson sitting on top.

I'm totally stoked!
That test bike looks like a day-glo pink Pro Freestyle Tour. What was your favourite trick? were you more ramp or flat?
I only ever learnt flat, I have a couple show bikes that make great projects and an 87 GT PFTTM as a rider. I might ride it once a month. I see what kids are doing today and it's crazy, but I still get a kick out of learning something old, like perfecting a lawn mower, I'm still trying to learn boomerangs. Hang fives are fun and are definately a trick that never got old ....lol.

Ok...a couple questions for Josh "Dr Air" White.
Q1. What's Josh's pick for the Streetbeat Shootout?
Q2. Who dubbed Josh "Dr Air"? A friend? GT marketing dept?...lol
Q3. Josh's fav bike and colour of all time?
Q4. Who were some of Josh's riding hero's?
Q5. How far did Josh take his Martial Arts?
I got this number plate on ebay from a guy in Melbourne Australia who had it signed by Josh and Martin at the 1987 BMX World Titles.
Q6. Does Josh remember signing it?
Q7. What was Josh's favourite year in freestyle?
Be sure to tell Josh to hop on the thread for a quick chat. That would be RAD!
Thanks, Robert.

I gave a copy of GTV to my best friend a few weeks back as it is a local legendeary tape we all watched BITD. He wanted it for his son. This copy is the original copy that our LBS rented to us for $5 daily (keep it as long as you want) it was @ least 10 years old when I acquired it. Still played OK when I gave it away.
No audio from Fiola, Scura, Aparijo, or Josh White, just cheesy music tracks over-dubbed. Josh was like the "new guy" and he had this sh!tty bike not pulling any tricks to completion. Then the dudes show up w/ a GT, apparel etc. and Josh miraculously transforms. Some footage of the team noshing @ Taco Bell, Aparijo doing the rare magic bike move and some sic infinity rolls. (Aparijo was a God @ flatland) Scura's Scura tuck. Josh ripping the ol' dudes a new one. He was a strong rider compared to most BITD, Powered through stuff like Miron. Cool to hear that Josh is OK.

Did Josh ever speak to Mark Eaton prior to the production of Joe Kid? Has even seen Joe Kid?
Does Josh keep in touch with any other former "famous" riders?
Did he save any stuff from his sponsorships?
What does Josh think of today's vert tricks? Today's flatland?

Josh, Jeremy and I had no idea that Joe Kid Stingray, VintageBMX.com or mag23.com existed. I stumbled across the website searching for stuff to show Josh's nephew how his uncle shredded it BITD. When I found the sites I immediately called Josh and Jeremy and that got the ball rolling.

More Upland skatepark 85'. This bowl was very scary at the time because all we rode was a 6 foot quarter pipe until we went to Venice beach and rode the 8 footers they had there.
Airing it out on the GT world Tour
Home for some practice on the Fergy Half pipe.

Man, what a story Josh must have. To come out of nowhere and dominate the world for a brief moment it time.
He left the limelight at the top of his game, too. It was weird, the new year rolled in and Martin and Josh were both GONE from the magazines, the both left GT, it was strange. The '89 pro GT team was totally different than than the year before.
Does anyone know WHY Josh and Martin left GT then? They were both in their prime!
jlw515
Apr 22 2006, 07:24 AM
No offense, but in 1989 Josh and Martin may have been "in THEIR prime" but "their" prime was no longer the standard of freestyle. Understand Martin Aparijo was my favorite flatlander BITD, but by 1989 Kevin Jones had reinvented flatland, and I think this is the time that GT picked up Kevin. Also, by 1989 Mat Hoffman turned pro and kicked his fellow Haro teammates (Blyther, McCoy, Wilkerson, Molinterno) in the butt with his airs.
Its sorta the same way when Josh White turned Pro, and Eddie Fiola just sorta faded away. Mat Hoffman turned pro & no one saw Josh White or Mike Dominguez anymore.
I will say that the fact that neither Martin or Josh were interviewed for Joe Kidd is my major complaint with the DVD. That and the fact that so much emphasis was placed on BMX Action and almost nothing was said about BMX Plus!
I don't remember Josh's part in Freestylin' USA. I remember Dave Voelker's. Does anyone have a copy or is there a sight you can download it from?
Also, around 1989 the only magazine coverage I remember seeing of Martin was some ad for a clothing company and it had a pic of Martin doing a fakie tree ride. I'll never forget the last interview I read with Martin. They asked him what trick he was working on and he said the hang-5 with the bars turned backwards with both feet on the pegs - like Kevin Jones. I knew at that point, Martin was no longer the king of flatland.

Thanks for all the pictures Custom Cruiser! I am really looking forward to hearing from "Dr. Air"
I guess the fact that my childhood heros can be found here is a primary reason I am glad to have found this site.
Eddie Fiola- amazing.
To all the pros who post here-
You guys were idols to me when I was trying to navigate my teenage years. Attempting to emulate your acheivements while experimenting with my bikes is largely what kept me off drugs (I spent all my money on parts...), and out of trouble (for the most part ;D ). I have a lot to thank you all for because the example you set was a healthy one for a young guy.
I only hope that my kids are fortunate enough to have such individuals to look up to.
Thanks again!
Philip
