Stephen,
My neighbor has a wireless router that is unprotected. I have been getting free internet service for the last 3 months.

I also work out of my car...I'm using a network card that is connected to a cell line so if I can get a cell signal I can also get online and send/receive e-mails....very handy!!!

Ah Internet mooching....Its fun is it. I was down in the Tampa area a few weeks ago and "borrowed" some one else signal as well. I broadcast a wireless connection at home and found my neighbor was using it. I since secured the connection to protect againist that...no blame - if you broadcast it and don't secure your signal then it is public domain.
Here is a tip for you Stephen if you work out of your car - most hotels broadcast unprotected wireless internet for guests. If you are close enough to hotel during a work day you can mooch their signal. Its great for checking vbmx during the day.

Yeah, another PI told me that he gets the signals from the motels too.
I just completed one of my reports, and that normlly takes another 1-2 hours out of, my already ended, day.
I am still getting used to this touchpad mouse
That was funny, the Mr. Rogers thing.....

I usuallly find business parks, etc. to snag a connection. If you use a mac you can get a program called "MacStumbler" which will ping when you drive past a signal.
I also have removed my real name from my CPU so if the owner sees I'm surfing their signal they get to see "Pig Eye Jackson" as the logon-lol.

Cool...
I heard too, that mody people do not no how to "hack" - and therefore, you are pretty safe for the most part. Especially if they are leaving there server open like that, they apparently are not too savy...

A wireless connection is basically a radio wave. It is public domain. Everyone can recieve the signal simply by turning on your laptop. If someone doesn't secure their connections they are leaving themselves open for "internet mooching" or even worse hacking. If their connection is secure you can receive the signal, but can not make use of the connection because of the sercurity...it is there you can see, but can't use it.
It is not illegal to jump on an unsecure wireless connection.

here is a fun trick. 1.find a open access point. 2. instead of typing "www.vbmx.com", type "192.168.0.1" don't include the quotes. this will log you into the router. use the user name "admin" (most people with an open access point don't change it). leave the password blank, (most people with an open access point don't choose one). now the fun really begins. you can change all the settings and passwords even turn it on and off. Of course you should never do this, and it is bad karma...but fun to look around!

I got home, and i had about 4 minutes of connection sitting at my Kitchen table.
Then it lost the connection....maybe they turned there router off??

Now, I just slid around the table, a few feet, and I get a connection that stays ?!?!?!
