you_got_2_legs (YG2L)! I see you joined the party! Well, I dug up some shots of you, so...enjoy.

Not to be outdone by the rest of us, YG2L works on his wedgeramp skills (with freewheel).

Ya know Denny, I have to admit...I like the pink gyro/cables and chain...it added some visual depth to the mass of blue, white and chrome of your sport.
u_got_2_legs
Pure terror there ^ I guess

wow, what dorky shots :-) OK, I'll admit the shots aren't the dorky part.

You dont want to know how much I kick myself for selling the thing but if I hadn't It would still just be hanging in the garage..
humidity saC
Denny YG2L, you sure had the fashion sense back then! I think you were the only guy in our town that freestyled in high tops! LOL! Nice pics STRIKE!
Railroad Ty
YG2L Nice to "see" you again. I like the facial expression on the last jumpin shot! EEEEE-TA!!!!!!
STRIKE
YG2L, that's the thing, it would still be in the garage The question is, would you do anything with it if you still had it? If you wouldn't restore it or ride it, then it's best that you gave it to someone who would. I know, I know...he should have kept the thing, but I'm trying to console him. LOL
Stone
This has to be the coolest post.
STRIKE
Here are a few pics of one of our main homie's, Pat. He, his brother Nick and their friend Ted made a 'Zine called..."The 'Zine" and it went for quite a few issues...15 if I recall correctly. Here are some shots I took of Pat getting "crit".

Pat decades out of a fire hydrant in Ohio. We went there to spectate the AFA Masters in 1988.

Here, Pat's jumping my car, of course he's landing in snow, but still, it's pretty cool.
Guav
We used to jump into snow banks all the time, that ****e was FUN. That fire hydrant photo is HOT .... doesn't look like he pulled it though heheh
Stone
Nice pics guys.
Pete Q
I agree, this is the coolest post ever. This is what this whole website/forum is about!
STRIKE
Thanks guys, I figured everyone would get a kick out of seeing everyone else's old bikes, tricks and fashions.

I have a stash of old pictures somewhere, pictures of myself that I really, really liked...but now I can't find them. I'll keep digging, but in the meantime, I'll put up more shots of the minnesota gang.
Stone
Thanks Strike and everyone who has posted pics
twintoptuber
Great thread,

Just seeing the rolled/tight cuffed pants, haircuts, short shorts, man half shirts (imagine wearing that now, lol), bikes with scattered parts, etc... brings back my old neighborhood. Complete time warp and one reason why I like these pics better than old pro pics......you guys were having fun. Keep'em rolling.
bmx-bandit
Pat is back.. yeah,, i'm telling you those photos rule...like I said,, before.. I need copies of those.. Get the cd going Stricke...
STRIKE
I found a bunch of negatives, so I'll try adding pics every couple of days or so. I'm waiting for Pat to add some pics...he has TONS of shots. I've discovered that I have almost no more shots of ditchweed, Pat or Denny. If you guys have some, please post them!

Here are a few more pics for your viewing pleasure.

OMG!!! Strike, I never knew you had that one of me?!?! Wow, we were young then. That had to be '81 or '82 then? Now that is really old school!!! I am stoked!

Compare the style:

saC from 1983

saC from 1991

Scott balances in the midst of one of our freestyle shows. I recall this show because the owner was p1ssed at Scott for wearing that shirt. I think it was one of those halfshirts with torn sleeves or something. Maybe someone else on the team remembers for sure.

Also of note in this picture:
1. Scott's mom (directly above Scott's head in the blue).
2. Pat's Dad (video camera) and his brother Nick (on the Mongoose) both near the 1/4 pipe. That might be his Mom over there too, but I'm not sure.
3. My old girlfriend (between the Camo and Orange Crush kids).

Mark (on the left) used to come to our neighborhood every once in a while to stay with his Grandma. I like how Ty is standing next Mark's Dyno, kinda like he just caught a big fish and he's proudly displaying it. Markmilkmelon

Hey everyone -

I'm in, I'm in!!! Cool pics...oh man, the memories.

As I write this, I'm watching a special on Dave Mirra, and they're showing Fred Blood, and all the old school riders. Wooohooo!!
STRIKE
Woah, Stagnant (Scott)!!! Awesome, so glad to see you on VBMX and especially this thread!

BTW, when you said "you have pictures I thought only I had" you were right, there are some of your familie's shots on these negatives. I have no idea how they came into my possession.

I'll try to post more pics on Sunday, heading to ValleyFair tomorrow.

SoonerTrickster
You guys have inspired me here. I'm gonna have to dig up the photos I scanned for a DVD I put together last year for my old teammates and post a couple up here.
SoonerTrickster
OK - here we go. I guess I'll start off with a minor claim to fame - a few pics from our two major magazine appearances. We always got good shows and had great promo, but I don't know that we were necessarily that good. Anyway, here's me lawnmowing from the April 1987 BMX Plus Freestyle Spectacular:

Here's a couple of my man Darren Price from April 1986's Freestyle (the one issue where they changed it from Freestylin' to Freestyle, then changed it right back)

Finally, our flatland expert, Keith, from the same issue of Freestyle. That ramp surface was springy.

Stagnant
Strike, I think you robbed my photo album when I was at the library studying for an final or something... hahahahhahahaha

I dug out all my old albums this weekend and found only a handful of photos. Mmmmmmmmmmmm I thought I had more...and most of yours I remember!! I'll try and scan some of the ones I found and send them to you.
STRIKE
Soonertrickster, I remember all those pics! I thought that was the best, when magazines would run photos/stories about local scenes. It's awesome that you guys got in print back then!

Stagnant, I probably did steal all your pics! Honestly though, I think that one roll is the only shots I have of yours. Maybe your parents have all of them stashed somewhere?
SoonerTrickster
Yeah, it was a huge deal to get in the mags back then. Really, all it took was a couple of phone calls. Both of those photo shoots took place when people from the mags were in town over Thanksgiving for the ABA Grand Nationals in OKC. I would just call them up beforehand and get in touch with the guys who were coming out and set it up. They were already there anyway, and we were giving them some material to fill space for free. Windy shot the Freestylin' one, and John Ker himself shot the BMX Plus one.

It turned out to really help us get shows - we had a box trailer built and our quarter-pipe welded on the back of it and took it on the road. We did some shows as far away as Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL, plus Kansas and all over Oklahoma.

I'll post some more pics when I get them uploaded. Those are all the magazine pics, though. I figured I'd fire off the big guns first.
pdub
I'm totally late to this thread but this is awesome. I'm going to dig up some good photos to add. Btw, STRIKE was correct...
quote:
Pat (Wirz) ran Tuff Wheels, from the first time I met him until he switched to metal 48's in the late 80's. I would bet you those Woody Itson bars you have that he NEVER used Z-rims. As far as I know, Ted ALWAYS ran Z-rims, as long as I knew him.

I never rode Z-Rims in my life.
Thlayli
Killer thread... I finally had time to look through the whole thing.

I was tempted to post a picture of me holding a famous Fodera, but it'd be a crime to threadjack this one.

Are you kidding? Post it, POST IT!!
DitchWeed
wow, did this thread die? Ill have to post a pic soon

p.s. I actually have a fedora pic of STRIKE to contribute...i just need to get it scanned!
STRIKE
I've been waiting for you, Stagnant and humidity saC to post photos for a while now.
DitchWeed
patience......BTW are you gonna go to that show at the mall on the 13th?
STRIKE
Ok, I found a S-load of old pics of me (and a few others ), so be prepared for an onslaught of STRIKE pics throughout the coming weeks.

Pushing the limits with a one hander on our 6' ramp, I should have been more concerned with getting my front wheel centered in the fork.

Scott inverts while I look on in the background. After seeing us on the news, the mayor of our town asked us to represent Rochester, MN at the Saint Paul "Taste of Minnesota". My Mom was stoked enough to take us up there and take pics of us. That's the Capitol building in the background btw.

Here I am backwards infinity rolling in practice at an MFS contest. BTW, check out that shirt...what was I thinking?

Thanks for posting. I just went through all 13 pages. Some really cool photography in there. Funny stuff too. You were cracking me up, ripping on yourselves. You guys were all right in style back then though. I wish I had a bunch of old pics of me and my friends like that.
COASTY

this pic is a pro rider from Australia back in 1980. His name is Alistair Johnson and goes by the name of Ajaybmx on here. He was a factory Quicksilver rider and was very famous down here during his time. He had a spot on a commercial for a litter campaign then too! I haven't seen this pic for over 25 years. Cool!
STRIKE
CASTVL, I belive they used that pic in Quicksilver ads? I swear I've seen it before (and not just here on VBMX).
Axman
Well here are a couple of my favorite wallpapers I made from this thread. I hope no one minds i used their pic to make these, but these two are good enough to share with you guys.
