Full Version: Golden Age of BMX Build Off (win a Hutch!)
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Bike Build Offs
Pages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
wired

Hutch produced complete bikes from 1980 to 1991 and is considered one of the most collectible and sought after BMX brands of all time. These years are heralded by many as the golden years for BMX. In this spirit, PorkchopBMX.com, Hutch BMX, and VintageBMX.com are sponsoring a build off to celebrate those years - the golden years. Now is your chance to take one more trip back to the eighties and relive those times by building a bike in celebration.

Rules
This build off will run from June 20th to mid-September (see timeline and dates below) and consist of three forum posts. This announcement and comments thread, a submission thread (open for two weeks) and the voting thread (open for one week). This is a drama free build off. wink.gif

1. Open to all VBMX members registered on or before 11:59 PM PDT Saturday, September 8th, 2012
2. Open to any brand 20" BMX bicycle, any model frame dated 1980-1991
3. You must build the bike from the frame up during the build off. No survivors or already built bikes may be entered. Violators caught breaking this rule will have all bikes entered disqualified.
4. You may enter multiple bikes but only one may win 1st, 2nd or 3rd - the bike with the most votes gets counted.
5. Entry deadline: None - all may build, all may enter right up to the final submission deadline of September 8th, 2012.
6. Submissions: Saturday, August 25th through 11:59 PM PDT Saturday, September 8th 2012 (a two week window)
- Post between one and four pictures of your entry in the submissions post
Note: if you post more than four your fifth and subsequent pictures will be removed, however, a link to supplemental pictures in another build thread is okay. Remember, the quality of your photos have a huge impact on the number of votes you receive.
- Submission post: http://www.vintagebmx.com/community/index....wtopic=27063100
6. Voting: Sunday, September 9th through 11:59 PM PDT Sunday, September 16th, 2012 (a one week window)
- All VBMX members registered before September 8th, 2012 may vote once (whether or not entered in this build off)
- voters will cast three votes in no particular order - each vote will count as one point
- No voting for your own bike
- Voting post: http://www.vintagebmx.com/community/index....wtopic=27063240
7. Results will be posted in the voting thread by Monday, September 17th, 2012

Prizes
1st place: $250 store credit at PorkchopBMX.com AND $250 CASH from VintageBMX.com
2nd place: $100 store credit at PorkchopBMX.com AND $100 CASH from VintageBMX.com
3rd place: $50 store credit at PorkchopBMX.com AND $50 CASH from VintageBMX.com

Porkchop's Chop Saw Choice: $100 store credit at PorkchopBMX.com for Porkchop's favorite build that uses a Chop Saw chainring, chainwheel, spider, or power disc.

Bonus
PorkchopBMX.com and Hutch BMX have teamed up to build a gorgeous early 80's Hutch Pro Racer complete with only the highest quality parts, including many of the new Hutch parts such as Aerospeed cranks and powerdisc, deep H stem, donut seat clamp, Hutch Kashimax Aero seat as well as Porkchop items as such as their shinyside rims, Dia-Compe brakes, etc. Thousands of dollars have been invested in this bike and it can be yours just for participating in this build off!
Each completed non-Hutch bike entered will be assigned one number or you can double your chances to win by entering a Hutch (each Hutch bike entered will be assigned two numbers). Once judging of the build off has ended and winners are announced, within 24 hours, Porkchop BMX will use Random.org to choose a number randomly from all completed entries to award the Hutch Pro Racer. The drawing will be videoed and promptly posted on YouTube. The winner will be shipped, at Porkchop BMX's expense, the Hutch Pro Racer via USPS to their address (anywhere in the world).

Add your before pics (not required), comments and progress pictures to this post starting now. Hurry, we aren't getting any younger!

Disclaimer: Any photos you post in the comments thread and submission thread may be used by Porkchop BMX, Hutch BMX, and Vintage BMX and therefore, posting of any photos is implied permission for these three companies to have unrestricted use of your photos for promotional purposes.

A Hutch right out of the starting gate - awesome! Glad you're not setting the bar too high... wink.gif

I'll play too - 1984 Kuwahara KYZ.

84 Kuwi - nice choice!

I was all set to play with a vintage Goose I've been sitting on for two years. Thought it was an '80 but just discovered it's a '78. Checking my inventory now for my next best candidate.

I've been sitting on a few projects for awhile now. Looks like a good reason to build. I'm in.

...maybe even mock up my pro racer just for a couple entries to win the porkchop racer cool.gif

I wanna play...
im rebuilding my old bike.. that was mine originally.. From the 80's when I raced..
It is completely torn down...
Am i eligible?

I also have an 88 Auburn, that I am still and have been slowly working on... Is that also eligible?

I have an old NOS Lime Green Streetbeat I have been meaning to build. And a General Bike Co. 1986 fork powder coated by C2 labs to match. Are Skyways too played out? I think I have some fresh ideas for it though. Do all the builds need NOS parts from the 80-91 time period to qualify or be considered? I have just about had it after scavenger hunting for the better part of 10 years. My man PorkChop pretty much has all the main components I need.

Although Skyway's freestyle bikes don't fetch the kind of bucks as their race bikes, they're an important part of freestyle's heritage - I say build it up!

There are no rules about components being from a certain era or OG vs. repop, etc. Just the frame has to be manufactured between 1980 and 1991. I've seen plenty of bikes tastefully built up with repop that steal the show versus an all OG bike (and I've also of course seen the opposite be true). Build what makes you happy - don't build to win. Winning a build off is just icing on the cake - that's why the BIG prize in this build off is being randomly given to a participant, regardless of the "level" of their bike. smile.gif

Thanks PorkMan!!!

Too bad there isn't a Mid School Build off. I love how this 2000 Dyno Air turned out. Powder from Ultimate Finishers (Newark NY), Drive train and wheels from Niagara Cycle Works, Grips and Brake Levers from Porkchop, Brakes, Gyro, Freewheel and Cables, from DansComp.

Yes. The requirement is that you build the bike during this build off. Before pics aren't required but if you think anyone will question whether or not it was previously built, it wouldn't hurt to post a pic here.

Someone asked me why we didn't just call this the "Summer Bike Build Off" - the answer: It isn't summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

This contest (and the resulting prizes) is open to anyone, worldwide. biggrin.gif
stingrayj33
I've had this thing hanging up for 18 years. This might be the incentive I need to do something with it.

Original paint and decals with plenty of scratches and chips. Still nice enough to not require a repaint. I have about half of the period-correct parts to build it.

I can't decide which I should build...I have a brand new Chrome 1983 JMC 3.1 XL frame and fork. It was NOS, the warranty card is still around the seat tube.

OR

A pre serial number NOS Hutch Pro Racer. From the Brake bridge I am guessing that it is a 1982 frame. It has never been built up either.

Decisions... decisions. I'll post pics to track the progress.

Just so I am clear... We are only allowed to post 4 pictures of the bike total?

Time to get serious about my Badd and Company 20"! I bought the frame/fork in the Fall of 1991 so I'm assuming it qualifies?. I don't think they dated their serial numbers. It's BCS2054. I know the BCS20 stands for (B)add and ( C )ompany (S)tretch (20)" so I'm guessing the (54) is the 54th Stretch frame made. Am I in?!?

The four pic max is just for the submission thread only. Since each page defaults to 15 posts that's 60 pics that will have to load for each page of entries. I highly recommend you start a build a thread and document your progress including the finish. Add that link to your four submission pics and people will be able to see everything you want them to.

Well, if you bought in '91 it had to made before then. With a quick Internet check I see ranges from 1987-2001. Any other Badd fans care to chime in?

The title is a misnomer....it says golden age which should include the earliest BMX bikes. Is this vintagebmx.com or mid schoolbmx.com? Not sure the motive behind this but I hope the rules will be reconsidered and opened up to include bikes from the Golden Age of BMX. Just my humble opinion.

It corresponds with the years Hutch made bikes. We're giving away a Hutch. In 1979 I was given a banana seat bike for Christmas. BMX was most popular in the 1980's, not the 1970's. That's what this build off is about.
agentheinz
It's what was decided, and that's your ticket... Pick something that fits the bill and get going!

I'm kind of glad it was narrowed a bit, as bikes made through that era are going to generally be on the same page more or less style, construction and tech wise.

Having everything from an old Stingray, R&R or an old Ashtabula kit built up all the way to an '88 Team Master can be a bit much to chew on.

I might be in, still thinking whether or not to go full bug on my survivor candidate. It has character, but sometimes you gotta just say what the ****. tongue.gif

Okay, I found one. I've been looking forward to having some fun with custom colors and doing my own decals so this '87 (I think) FST will be my canvas.

Thanks again to PorkchopBMX.com, Hutch BMX and VintageBMX.com for putting up such awesome prizes. To date, I've never seen prize levels this high or CASH awards - ever!

But, don't build thinking you're going to win. Build your bike because it's in your blood and, most important, have fun doing it!
agentheinz
The thought of winning is just a bonus... I'm just in the project kind of mood at the moment anyway. Why not...

These are some really nice prizes. Very generous indeed. cool.gif

And the pot grows! Just got word that Bullseye has joined as a sponsor so expect to see one of the best hubs ever made added to the Hutch being given away.

Details will be added to the first post as soon as I have them!

Agentheinz - looking forward to seeing another Haro being done here - Nice!

Anyone else care to share a before pic? They're not required, but I think one of the coolest parts of a build off is seeing a single before pic followed by an after. I'm predicting we'll see 40 BMX bikes saved and brought back from the dead.

Hi all

Just started consolidating the parts for the Hutch build in the dining room. smile.gif

Shown below is the bike we're giving away - a Pro Racer (1984 I think) frame/fork/bars that have fresh chrome and new decals. We're using red as the main accent color. Hutch BMX has provided the Kashimax/Hutch seat, padset, Aerospeed crank arms, power disc, deep "H" stem, and bear cage pedals. Bullseye is sending us the hubs. The rest will come from both Porkchop BMX (both our stock and some OG items).

I'll use this thread to chronicle this build and the two other Pro Racers we're building inhouse for ourselves.

As a reminder, submitting a complete bike (that follows the rules in the first post) enters you to win this bike which will have a value in the $2500-$3000 range. Our hope is that it will be an incentive for lots of folks to participate biggrin.gif

(I see that Lego At-At up there Bob. Cool!)

Man, I just finished an awesome little CW. Would have been cool to enter, but I've had it going all this year, so no on that one.

I could probably get this Haro and maybe 1 other done in time. I threw these parts on it for a mock-up for the photos, but it's just sitting as a frame and fork right now. I'll be for sure using the bars and rear brakes, we'll see about the rest though.

Why not? The winner of the Hutch is chosen by random drawing and the judged winners are chosen by the membership here. What advantage does he have over anyone else? He isn't paid or compensated in any way to run this build off.

I don't know how many ways this can be said: If you don't like the rules, don't participate.
Porkchopzz4
The giveaway Hutch is coming along - here's what's done so far. I got the spindle for the cranks, but still need to get the bottom bracket before I can install it. Also, need the hubs from Bullseye before work on the wheels can begin.

An 84 Hutch Pro Racer is being sent to me now so I might as well jump in.

Gonna be a racer, not a showcase piece.

Looking good Justin! I've never owned a Hutch but I can see some real TLC will be going into yours.
